What didn’t you like about Roy McMillan’s performance?

I enjoyed the story greatly except for the awful narration of female characters, especially Margaret. His tone for Margaret's voice was so poor ... making her seem simpering and breathy when she was clearly nothing of the sort....that at first I thought I would not be able to stomach the book at all. Only after downloading the actual book did I begin to enjoy it. For the rest of the series I shall stick to the book and forget the audio version completely.

I listened to Dunstan first , which was one of the best books I've ever had. This is almost as good and just as superbly read . Am so pleased to find that this is the first in a trilogy, have already purchased book two !. If you like historical fiction that is largely based on facts, this is a must . Can't recommend highly enough.

I've previously read a historical fiction of the War of the Roses but this is a remarkable retelling of the events of the history.
Both the writing and narration is exemplary and I'm looking forward to continuing the story.

Conn Iggulden is a master storyteller and he skillfully weaves the known facts of English history with his interpretation of events and his characterisation of the players.
It's well written, well narrated and brings one of the most exciting periods of our past (exciting meaning battles, betrayal, lust for power and death) to life with a vibrancy that is compelling.
Perfect for a long drive, walk or to curl up and listen at home. But it is hard to tear yourself away.
But be warned - having heard this one, you'll need to get the other three audiobooks in the series!

Sharp, fast-paced and bloody, Iggulden begins his tale of the War of the Roses with bold strokes and flourish. It is not history proper, but his writing still gives the reader a good sence of the flow and logic of events as well as the spirit of the times. The main cast of characters are memorable, the battle scenes vivid and brutal, the various schemes and machinations a delight to follow. If the book has one real weakness, it is the portrayal of the Yorkist faction - a bit more nuance and love for the "bad guys" would have been appreciated.

I often wonder about the backgrounds of historical eras. This book brought it all into view with a great style and transported. me Really nice touch at the end when the author takes time to explain how he came to write the book within timeframes, proven characters and events in regards to historical accuracy.
