About this listen

The throne of England is slipping from King Henry’s grasp. His only son has drowned in the English Channel, and the predators are gathering ready to devour both England and Normandy.

When the last of King Harold’s housecarls returns to England to die, he brings with him a reluctant hero who will save the kingdom. Alfraed, son of Ridley, is the first of a new breed; he is an English knight.

English Knight is a fast-moving audiobook set in that most turbulent of times, The Anarchy. Filled with action and battles, this is the first in a series of chronicles painting a picture of a bloody time in English history when the only people you could rely on were your household warriors and you slept with a dagger beneath your bed.

The hero turns from a spoiled boy into a formidable leader and warrior. His transformation in the hurly burly of the 12th century is interesting and enjoyable.

A fantastic tale to get you lost in a medieval world. Treachery, Conflict, Coming-of-Age and plenty of Violence. This is an excellent listen.

Perfect Medieval Escapism

Griff writes very compelling stories based on the historic setting, and immense knowledge of his subject. As soon as one book is finished, I can’t wait to read the next one, and the stories are well written, but very easy to listen to without requiring intense concentration or any boring sections. It is very easy to follow the progress of the hero and the actions that are involved.

The narrator is good and pleasing to listen to, but my only criticism will be that the different characters voices are not sufficiently the similar to rank it as the finest narration. It would be good if he could have developed a wider range of internation, style, and character.

Easy to listen

Great idea, and awesome choice of time period. Well written and performed, although a little formulaic early on

Good introduction to a new series

I normally listen to books to help me get to sleep. Sadly, this book was far too good to allow this to happen and I stayed up for too many nights listening to the tale rather than getting the much needed rest which was intended.

Great book!

I do not know this author and I chose the 1st book of this series as I appreciate the narrator’s work. The story was quite interesting and I am looking forward to the next book.

Interesting look into a little known chapter of British history.

griff hosker is fast ly climbing my favourite author ranks.
saxon after 1066 had a very bad time, this story follows a returning warrior and his son from self exile, a resentful son born to luxury in constantinople must adjust to this new life.
King's, knights, soldiers and peasantry, from everyday life to intrigue and battle, great descriptive writing has you there amongst them.
add the excellent malk Williams narration, and this should be another great series.

another winner
