About this listen

‘This book is the monster that lives inside your closet’
GRADY HENDRIX,
New York Times bestselling author of How to Sell a Haunted House

From the New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box, Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman is a chilling, wholly unique tale of true horror about a family as haunted as their home.

To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddy and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: ‘Can I go inside your heart?’

When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay.

Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel.

But Other Mommy needs an answer.

Critic reviews

Deeply discomfiting, imaginatively ripe, yet ruthlessly efficient . . . Simply put – and I do not say this lightly – Incidents Around the House is the most purely effective horror novel I have ever read (Esquire, Best Horror Books of 2024)
A masterwork of unadorned existential terror (Zoje Stage, USA Today bestselling author of Baby Teeth)
Josh Malerman is such an insidious architect. I call all of his haunted houses home, and this just might be his most devilish design yet (Clay McLeod Chapman, author of What Kind of Mother and Ghost Eaters)
This haunting exploration of the perils of childhood is a story that will stay with you for a long time to come (Gwendolyn Kiste, Lambda Literary and Bram Stoker Award–winning author of Reluctant Immortals and The Rust Maidens)
This book does worse than stay with you – it stalks you. Page-turning and nerve-burning – don’t read it after dark (Hailey Piper, Bram Stoker Award–winning author of Queen of Teeth and A Light Most Hateful)
Incidents Around the House effortlessly draws the reader in for a deeply unsettling and genuinely frightening read. It’s a masterclass in scares (Brian Keene, bestselling author of End of the Road)
Hereditary meets Skinamarink: one of my favorite books of the year (Sarah Langan, author of A Better World)
Terrifying, beguiling, bewitching, awesomely constructed and a masterpiece of voice and dread (Nat Cassidy, author of Mary: An Awakening of Terror and Nestlings)

Absolutely loved it!

This was such a good listen! The narration was excellent, especially considering the narrator was only 17 when she recorded it. The story was great, genuinely creepy, sad in places, and the fact that it’s from the POV of a child definitely gives it extra creep factor. The story was well paced, never dragged and really made me look forward to listening. And the ending? Really well done, and will definitely stay with me

Narrator! Who are you!?

Never would I have thought I would be so entranced and fascinated by a woman voicing a child. But boy was I ever. Story is captivating and well written and the narrator actually enhances the melody of the writing. Great pairing of author and narrator.

Creepy as hell, and brilliantly read

Absolutely superb. Incredibly eerie, suspenseful, and full of dread. The reader does a wonderful job with the character voices and brings the world to shuddering life.

It's somewhere between a haunting, possession, or demonic presence story, and the ambiguity is part of the fun. I was unsure from the blurb - it sounded a little generic - but I highly recommend it.

“Can I go inside your heart?”

Josh Malerman’s “Incidents Around The House” is genuinely chilling. Told from the perspective of 8-year-old Bela, this novel tapped into something lying dormant in my subconscious, locked in the cupboard of my childhood. It’s quite an achievement.

The surreally realised, malevolent entity “Other Mommy” isn’t the only thing haunting this family, and the story is equal parts scary and heartbreaking. It’s a hard novel to put down, incredibly immersive, and the ending is devastating. Let this unnerving, and deeply effective novel go inside your heart, what’s the worst that could happen?

Superb narration/ performance

Very engaging main character, brilliant story and 12/10 narration. I was rather bereft when it was over!

The narrator

Narration was absolutely brilliant when you find out it’s one woman doing, what I thought, was a multiple cast production. Brilliant performance and although the “mommy says” got on my nerves a bit at the beginning, that wore off as the story took hold.

Good but not quite great

Incidents is a good book that is, at times, great. The voice feels authentic without falling into the trap of being annoying, the antagonist (Other Mommy) is a genuinely creepy creation, and there are plenty of interesting scenes set up. The working parts all work great.

But, for me, considering this is a short novel, it feels overlong. I think it’s possibly because we as the reader know about Other Mommy straight away and she’s with us for the entirety of the story. This contributes to some repetitiveness and dilutes the effect. The length also stretches the time spent with the truly awful Ursula, which did not help me, personally.

I think this would have been a phenomenal novella. As it is, it’s a pretty good, but flawed, novel.

I’d like to add that the audiobook narration is superb, too.
