About this listen

Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.

Connecticut, 1666.

An ancient spirit awakens in a dark wood. The wildfolk call him Father, slayer, protector.

The colonists call him Slewfoot, demon, devil.

To Abitha, a recently widowed outcast, alone and vulnerable in her pious village, he is the only one she can turn to for help.

Together, they ignite a battle between pagan and Puritan - one that threatens to destroy the entire village, leaving nothing but ashes and bloodshed in their wake.

“If it is a devil you seek, then it is a devil you shall have!”

"I loved this book. A roaring, bloody, beautiful work of pure imagination." (Andy Davidson, author of The Boatman's Daughter)

"Punctuated by moments of unanticipated levity as well as unmitigated terror, this clever and imaginative tale is not to be missed by fans of dark fantasy and historical horror." (Library Journal)

I so enjoyed this book so much. Spooky atmospheric the author paints a beautiful scene and you empathise with the characters. The narrator portrays all characters with magnificence will definitely come back to this one.

Spooky witchy delight

Narrated very well, story good, wish there was more. Hated it coming to an end. Wasn't scary but there was some suspenseful moments ***spoiler*** Wish the husband had more of a role for a bit longer but still very good.

Great book

This was my favourite audiobook I've listened to so far. I'm going to give Brom's other books a read and then I will definitely return to this one! Such enchanting characters, it is incredibly written and the audio performance is amazing. Highly recommend!

I absolutely loved this book I didn’t want it to end! So intense at times, I would have loved to know more about abithas and samsons life after her resurrection but other than this can’t say a bad thing about it, definitely give it a go if your into witchy cult sort of books.

Amazing

Couldn't put it down. Dark as all Brom's work, however there were patches of dazzling brightness too.

Fantastically Dark

I gave this book a try after seeing it mentioned in folk horror fiction lists, and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the setting and the story, and the slow tension was really great at points. I liked how strange it was, and the horror was great. I also enjoyed the progression of the characters, and the magical pagan elements.

I was on holiday when I listened to this so got through it quite quickly, but it is very long, probably longer than necessary. Parts started to feel very repeative as it progressed, and Samson's constant soul seeking and repetition of "no, noo!" got tiresome.

Part of this annoyance was from the narrator, that overall does a good job but her English accents were quite grating at points, especially with certain words. Abitha sounded almost Australian at times which wasn't great. This is a nitpick, but again, it's a very long audiobook it was quite noticeable! This could just be a Brits perspective though, overall it really was good.

I did enjoy this and would recommend it, especially if you like witchy woodsy folk magic kind of stories.

Engaging pagan folk horror

Slewfoot 🤎

I see why everyone loves this book so much, it was beautiful, devious, magical & moving all at the same time. I absolutely adored it 🫶🏻

The story focuses around Abitha, she’s a bit of an outcast married off by her drunk father at 17 & moving to a village that’s strictly god run with the most ridiculous of rules & the most vile humans. When her husband dies at the hands of the wildfolk, his brother wants to take the farm to pay off his debts & makes an impossible deal with her in order to get it.

Abitha ends up meeting the wildfolk & Samson (slewfoot) who has forgotten who he is & what he’s put on this earth to do. They come together, everything changes. The self discovery, determination & her strength is just admirable through out.

With the dark folklore & historical horror, it’s like you are transported back to 1666 with it. The way these characters become part of you. It’s just so incredibly done 🥹

Honestly this will stay as one of my favourite reads of all time. I bought the paperback once I’d finished for the most stunning art work. I’d give this 100⭐️ if I could!

Adored this!!
