About this listen

Discover the mind behind the modern economy.
This edition features a custom introduction offering biographical insight into Adam Smith’s life and the historical context that shaped his revolutionary ideas. From his early years in Scotland to his mentorship under moral philosopher Francis Hutchinson, uncover the journey that culminated in two of history’s most influential works.

The Wealth of Nations (1776), presented in its complete, unabridged version, laid the foundation for modern economic theory. Divided into five parts, Smith’s analysis of self-interest, free markets, and the division of labor continues to shape economic policies worldwide.

The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), which Smith considered his most important work, explores human morality. Smith argues that empathy—what he called a “mutual sympathy of sentiments”—plays a crucial role in shaping our actions toward others.

Together, these works present a complete vision of Smith’s philosophy: a world where human behavior is driven by both economic self-interest and moral responsibility. His timeless ideas remain essential for understanding the complex relationship between economics and human nature, and continue to influence thought today.

Spanning over 57 hours, whether you're studying economics, philosophy, or seeking to grasp the foundations of capitalism and morality, the Adam Smith Collection offers an unparalleled journey into the mind of the father of modern economics.

It was great to find both of these books together as an audiobook. I have loved listening on my way to work everyday. It has been a marathon of an audiobook, but such a worthwhile lisen. It is packed with such interesting information, and the good narration helps to make the subject easy to digest. truly inspiring

I feel so intellectually sated and yet somehow overwhelmed at the prospect of being exposed to this compendium of the works of Adam Smith. The breadth and depth of insight into economic affairs and human nature by Smith are simply amazing; I found myself often pausing to reflect on just how his ideas continue to shape our world today. While the 18th-century language and the closely compacted economic ideas sometimes proved a laborious text to read, the benefits of continuing to struggle through the material were great. What this ends up amounting to is the appreciation of Smith's truly ground-shaking thinking and thus a wishing to take a further look at the complex dance between economics and morality in our present society.

So comprehensive

I had no idea that Adam Smith has so many opinions on so many things that are so relevant to today’s world. I thought the narrator brought his ideas to life also.

Long but well done

Smith basically invented capitalism, then turned around and said, Hey, don’t be a selfish jerk. One book is about markets running themselves, the other is about humans having, you know, morals. Both are weirdly still relevant, but damn, it's a long listen great for killing time in traffic.

Insights on Economics and Ethics

This book brings together Adam Smith’s two foundational works. It’s been intriguing to see how his ideas on economics and morality connect. The Wealth of Nations gets into the workings of economies and markets, while The Theory of Moral Sentiments explores human behavior, ethics, and the role of empathy. Listening to them together in this book gave me a fuller picture of Smith’s thoughts on how societies function. This collection offers a well-rounded look at Smith’s impact on both fields if you're interested in economics or philosophy

Excellent classic collection

The Adam Smith Collection audiobook is a great resource for anyone interested in economics, philosophy, or the foundations of modern capitalism. Combining The Wealth of Nations and The Theory of Moral Sentiments, this collection provides a comprehensive look at Adam Smith’s ideas in both economics and ethics. It also includes a short biography of Adam, which I enjoyed.
The Wealth of Nations offers a detailed analysis of market dynamics, the division of labor, and the principles of free trade, all of which remain relevant today. The Theory of Moral Sentiments, on the other hand, complements this economic perspective by exploring human nature, morality, and social behavior. Together, these works provide a holistic view of how societies operate—balancing individual self-interest with collective well-being.
The narration is clear and engaging, and the narrator’s pacing and tone make Smith’s often complex language more accessible.
Whether you’re revisiting these classics or exploring them for the first time, this is a great listening experience. Highly recommended!
