About this listen

Udo has escaped his home world in search of peace and found only more trouble living among the giants of Talamh. When he decides he cannot live within the restrictions of their society any more than his own, he flees to the country and forests beyond.

There, he runs into his old friend Gefan, who offers to take him to a new world where he can find the ultimate peace of mind he's always sought along with Ing, the goddess-mother Udo never stopped searching for.

Led on a treacherous journey through the caverns of Hel, Udo is pursued constantly by the demons of that realm as well as their master, an omniscient being known only as The Watcher. Along with Gefan, he must escape these creatures and the many perils that lie beyond to gain the halls of An and ultimately, the throne of God.

A truly enjoyable journey, written by a master of character and performed by exquisitely by Michael Kramer (A true rival for RC Bray).

Josh Gayou's writing puts you right in the mind of the characters and you really do 'see' the world and people that are being described. The trade-off is that the pace is relatively slow, with the plot developing very slowly (sometimes). In fact, this is not really a plot driven book, but a journey of one mans life to his ascension to god-hood (I'm not giving much away considering the title of the book).

Each book in the series does something different, and this one takes a more philosophical approach, but each one is thoroughly engaging in it's own way. The ending is almost as expected, so not a great surprise, but still enjoyable.

I can't wait for JGs next series.

Now if only I could cross breed Josh Gayou with Philip Pullman I might get an author who can write brilliant characters whilst shifting the plot along at a much faster pace, I'd be in audible heaven.

Loved the first book, but struggled as the trilogy went on. Narrator was excellent I thought.

I gave the second book a less favourable review because of the change in narrator, but viewing the entire series as a piece it actually adds to the submersion in the story line. It coincides with some fundamental changes in the main protagonist and the direction in which the story is headed. Joshua Gayou is firmly cemented as one of, if not my most favoured author around.

I’m not much one for fantasy. I actually thought This series was going to be a space opera due to the “worldship” bit in the title which is a lot more my preferred genre. But Joshua has an outstanding knack for storytelling and I was never once able to predict where the story was going. Michael Kramer solidified Udo as a simple, humble being and I would say he was absolutely outstanding in this role.

A book without a story is just a collection of sentences cobbled together. This was unlistenable and I had to stop half way through. No story at all.. nothing. No reasons given for Udo to be where he was and with no idea where the plot was going and even the dialogue seemed stilted and unfocused. I admit to being very surprised as I have found Gayou's other books to be interesting and engaging tales. I especially enjoyed his "commune" series. But this was extremely disappointing and the credit will be returned. I found Michael Kramer's narration to be heavy going and it really didn't help such a slow moving book. Much like his performance in the Words of Radiance series it dragged Udo's slow pace into a glacial crawl. A pity R.C Bray was replaced after book 1.
