About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Craig Alanson comes a thrilling new series that melds action-packed urban fantasy with his signature humor, read by none other than award-winning narrator R.C. Bray.

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet.

I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why?

I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know. I don’t have a wand or a sword, and I don’t ride a dragon. I carry a Glock, and drive around in a beat-up RV with a talking dog.

Yeah. The talking dog was a surprise to me, too. Duke is inhabited by the spirit of a 3,000-year-old wizard from Babylon, and he’s a good dog, but he is still a dog, and that’s a problem. Like, he still thinks squirrels are his mortal enemy. And that I don’t feed him enough. How did the spirit of a wizard reach across millennia, to our time? I don’t know.

The truth is, I’m not much of a wizard, because there’s not much magic in the world for me to work with. But there used to be magic. And magic is coming back as our world converges with the Nether.

Unless I can stop it.

Took a chance on this and was well rewarded with a enticing storyline really brought to life by the narrator RC Bray.
You could draw parallels to C Alansons Expeditionary Force series but that was great in its own right and This was really very different so was not an issue.
Put me down for the next book for sure.

Great new story

I can't wait for more, the dog is the standout character for me, loved the performance too

Alanson does it again

I did enjoy the story and as always great narration from Mr Bray. The story however, seemed to lack depth and purpose. Specifically I think my problem was that the addition of several characters seemed to just fill space in the book.
I suspect/hope this will serve as a launchpoint for the series. If following the trajectory of E.F. which the first half of Columbus Day was truly painful, became one of my most enjoyed series ever. If this is the case then it's a good start and roll on book 2.

Enjoyable

A great story, I think the narration was a bit slow and painful for maybe the first half, but it soon warmed up and got going. Well worth a listen 👍

Started a bit slow, ended great!

This Is just one filthy monkey's opinion but I really enjoyed this book, a great start to the series. I was a bit sceptical reading reviews before listening, and now I don't understand them. First the concept it great and the performance equally so. The writing style is very similar to Ex Force which I see as a positive, it's why we have favourite authors.

I'm excited for future books in this series and need to know if Duke gets his steak.

Great start, keep em comin.

An easy listen that will help uplift your mood. I would recommend to an expeditionary force reader.
