About this listen

Matt Beckford's sole ambition is to turn forty with his life sorted. With a Porsche on the drive and a high-flying job, it looks like things are perfect.

But when Matt's wife unexpectedly calls time on their marriage, a chain of events is set in motion that very quickly sees him facing forty broke, homeless and completely alone. But all is not lost because Matt has a plan…

Perfect beach listen

Mike Gayle does what I have come to think of as 'Blokelit' - a blokey relationship story for girls to read, done really, really well. Very enjoyable story and narration - you really come to care about the characters. Almost (but not quite) as good as 'My New Best Friend', but great fun in its own right. Check out its prequel 'Turning 30', if you haven't already, as well as agony uncle Mike Gayle's other books. This is not what I would usually read - I don't tend to do chicklit, e.g. - but I loved it.

Good Alternative to a Woman's Tale

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The story flowed well and listening to a mans story of coping with a break up and heading for a milestone birthday is unusual but worked really well.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character was my favourite (note English spelling). His emotions and thoughts seemed real and believable.

What about Matt Bates’s performance did you like?

The narration was excellent. Clear, good use of voices and flow was good.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Parts did make me SALTS (smile a little then stopped). Humour was good.

Any additional comments?

A nice alternative to a woman in the same situation.

Disappointing

I am afraid I found the main character utterly pathetic and annoying..needs to grow up and stop thinking the world owes him a living...

Great summer read

Where does Turning Forty rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a great light read about a guy reluctantly entering his fortieth year. From a happy married life with a great paying job, his whole life changes. This is how he works towards managing his impending "adulthood" and change of circumstances. Some happy and funny moments.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Turning Forty?

The great finish.

What three words best describe Matt Bates’s performance?

Well read, you just thought the guy was talking to you.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It could be so much worse, but you didn't know it at the time.

Any additional comments?

Great beach read for men or women.

Hugely unlikeable lead character

I've enjoyed a number Mike Gayle's books but not this one. The lead character is vacuous and most of his friendship group are much the same. I just didn't care what happened to him which is never good
