About this listen

Terry Flynt is a struggling legal clerk, desperately trying to get promoted. And then he is given the biggest opportunity of his career: to help defend a millionaire accused of murdering a woman in his hotel suite. The only problem is that the accused man, Vernon James, turns out to be not only someone he knows, but someone he loathes.

This case could potentially make Terry's career, but how can he defend a former friend who betrayed him so badly? With the trial date looming, Terry delves deeper into Vernon's life and is forced to confront secrets from their shared past that could have devastating consequences for them both. For years he has wanted to witness Vernon's downfall, but with so much at stake, how can Terry be sure that he is guilty? And what choices must he make to ensure that justice is done?

Packed with twists, turns, and an unforgettable trial scene, The Verdict is the most page-turning British legal thriller in many years.

Too long and convoluted at times.

Clearly, I am in the minority in not loving this book. I liked a lot about it, but lost interest about 90 minutes from the end. There were just too many threads and it became rather convoluted. It finished me off when MOSSAD became involved. That just seemed a bit unnecessary and OTT.

David Thorpe is one of my favourite narrators. He did a great job as usual.

Good without being excellent.

The storyline was good and the pace was about right to keep me looking forward to the next instalment (I listen in the car).

The characters were believable and apart from some unnecessary sub stories I enjoyed it.

The one criticism I had was I felt he had been on the creative writing course tending to tautology. For example “the frozen lake wrapped in frost,” “like an empty house shrouded in silence”.

I enjoyed the book despite that. I will return to this author again.

Very well presented and written book.

Gripping plot, great characters and a very good flow. So good I listened to it twice albeit 7 years apart.

Brilliant!

it's a bit of a slow burner at first but definitely worth sticking with as it gathers pace and becomes compelling listening
It has great attention to detail and the courtroom scenes provide an insight into what really happens in the British legal system
Brilliantly narrated too and a very enjoyable book overall

My Verdict

I didn’t like the narration of this book and it took several chapters to ease in to his speech. There was too many “he said” “she said” in the story at the beginning that drove me mad. Also the main character, Terry, the way his wife said his name :$ I wanted to reach in to my phone and strangle her.
All in all the book was enjoyable once I’d gotten over my issues ;)) The story had me wanting to keep listening to find out what happens to everyone and whether The Verdict equals justice.

The Verdict on The Verdict

Enjoyable first book by Nick Stone. I know some people have compared him to John Grisham but I’m not sure. The reason I gave it 3/5 was because it strayed too far from being plausible, especially around aspects of the police investigation. However I did enjoy it.

Thoroughly enjoyed

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Totally absorbing, excellently narrated, believable characters and the central character is likeable.

Any additional comments?

As with any really good book, couldn't wait to get to the end, and was so disappointed not to have more to read.
