About this listen

Debut author Sheldon Siegel bursts into the legal thriller arena with a riveting courtroom drama, exposing the world of big-time law firms and lawyers in a fresh, sharp-witted, wonderfully sardonic novel.

Meet Mike Daley. Ex-priest. Ex-public defender. And as of yesterday, ex-partner in one of San Francisco's most prominent law firms. Today he's out on his own, setting up practice on the wrong side of town. Then his best friend and former colleague is charged with a brutal double murder, and Daley is instantly catapulted into a high-profile investigation involving the prestigious law firm that just booted him.

As he prepares his case, Daley uncovers the firm's dirtiest secrets. It doesn't take long for him to discover that in this trial, ambition, friendship, greed, and long-standing grudges will play just as important a role as truth and justice.

Brilliantly paced, crackling with energy and suspense, Special Circumstances reminds us why we love to hate lawyers - but can't get enough of courtroom drama when it's done this well.

I enjoyed more of a courtroom drama than a thriller but enjoyable all the same

I worked it out early on

Sheldon Siegel is a very accomplished writer and obviously knows the legal system inside out. I felt I was in very safe hands listening to this and the narrator was just right for the book.
While I did enjoy it I sometimes felt the minutiae of the court room dialogues was a little too much but this is a minor niggle. I will buy the next book in the series so that says quite a lot really!

A good listen

I came across this author and gave him a try. So glad I did a well written and narrated book. Compare well with mark Giminez or Grisham.

Great legal drama

Great book and excellent narrator. Really enjoyed the Mike Daley character, didn’t see the twist at the end but once it began to unravel did predict where it was heading, the book was no less enjoyable for that.
Lots of courtroom action and full of sardonic humour. Looking forward to more in this series (although already disappointed to see that after the first few books they halve in length).

My first from this author but won’t be my last!

I have just finished this audible book in record time. the story is great, a clever courtroom drama with who done it intertwined. The main character is charismatic and very likable, someone you would be happy to know. the Narration was excellent, I bought into the characters, he made them real. For me this book had everything I wanted. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Off to buy the next one!

Great story and excellent narrator!! Pick this!

Took me a while to get into this book and the narrator's style but I'm glad I stayed with it. Once I was into it I was hooked. Lots of court room action which I personally love. Great story with touches of humour throughout and Tim Cambell did a great job.

Great listen

This book has a good story line and is read well, the characters seem to come to life and halfway through you think you have the ending - rest assured you don't.
I'm already looking forward to the next in the series

Really enjoyed this book. Kept me interested all the way through. Good characters and loved the court room.
Did not foresee the ending. Highly recommend.

Hard to put down

In my opinion, "Special Circumstances" is not as well-written as other legal thrillers I've listened to. The narrative lacks the gripping tension and refined language that typically hold my attention in similar audiobooks. The poor dialogue and lack of focus on key elements within the story make it a less satisfying experience overall.
The audiobook's primary focus is on Mike Daley's but unfortunately, his character along with little emphasis on the individual on trial, did not allow me to get engaed in the story. Additionally, the dialogue often feels forced and unnatural, detracting from the overall listening experience.
One of the recurring issues is Daley's cynicism, which might have intended to add depth to his character but instead comes off as abrasive and unlikable. I do not know how he could have won over the jury with his attitude.
Compared to legal thrillers by Michael Connelly, John Grisham, and Scott Turow, "Special Circumstances" falls short. It lacks the polish and sophistication found in works by these authors, making it less compelling and engaging.

Average legal thriller
