About this listen

A gloriously entertaining audiobook from one of Britain's top criminal lawyers.

A notorious loan shark is shot dead, in broad daylight, right outside the front doors of the Old Bailey. The killer is arrested at the scene and Adrian Stanford is lined up to take on the toughest defence case of his career. Can he steer his client past the no-nonsense Detective Chief Superintendent ‘Iron-Rod' Stokes, hell-bent on achieving a murder conviction in his last case before retirement? That's assuming he can keep his client alive in prison long enough for the trial to go ahead. Can his illustrious defence QC, Patrick ‘The Edge' Gorman, swerve the case past the acerbic judge known to all as Mack the Knife, whose own resolve is being tested to the limit by an adulterous wife? And why is London underworld numero uno Big Jake Davenport showing such a keen interest in the proceedings?

A wickedly eccentric cast of brilliantly drawn characters populate this daring debut from one of Britain's top criminal defence lawyers. Dripping with sparkling dialogue and delicious wit, Murder at the Bailey is a masterly picaresque romp through the courtrooms, custody suites and London restaurants graced by the cognoscenti.

Critic reviews

"A pacy, witty, riveting tour de force." (Wensley Clarkson)

"Fast, funny and readable, Murder at the Bailey is an enjoyable romp through a criminal world more recognisable decades ago: rogues' justice often prevails, against a background of colourful lifestyles, from expensive restaurants and bars to flashy cars and mistresses… Few lawyers can turn their hand to fiction after a lifetime processing the dry details of the law. Milner clearly can, and with verve and humour." (The Times)

Brilliant storyline with great characters. Lots of twists & turns & perfecting you like a court room drama.

Great story & perfect narration

I couldn't stop listening to this gem. An eyebrow-raising story, excellent characters and characterisation, great pace, cracking dialogue and hugely entertaining performance by the reader.

One of the best books I've listened to!

Well written and somewhat funny. But you have to have a story to tell and interesting caracters. This book has neither. And the readers performance does not help. Almost quit the book out of boredom before it was finished.

Good language but dull story

You will not be disappointed. Narration is such fun and a wonderful change. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Could listen to it all over again. Looking forward to the next one.

Brilliant

Story was ok but the narrator’s over the top character voices really spoilt it for me. Less would have been more in this case.

Cringey Narration

I couldn't put my headphones down, what an absolute joy! Well written and performed
Will definitely revisit this gem.

such fun

I read the reviews and synopsis of this book and I thought it would be a good listen. Not sure it flowed as well as it could have. Did the whisky change brands? The judges adulterous wife sounded very much like the late Dick Emery. However I listened to it while working and it was okay.

Interesting Storyline

Gentle engaging humour, delightful insights and decades of Bon mots from the front seat of justice- loved it!

Terrific listen

The story was far fetched - but easy listening and I liked the round ip at the end, very tidy. Narration was a bit over the top in areas.

Not bad but a bit too much Rumpole characterisation

I did not enjoy it because apart from a few witticisms, the narrative of the book is abhorrent. If you take a loan you should return or not to take it at all. Justification of murder of people to whom one owes money is not a decent thing.

Dull
