About this listen

Eadie Browne is an odd child with unusual parents, living in a strange house neighbouring the local cemetery. Bullied at school – but protected by her two best friends Celeste and Josh, and her many imaginary friends lying six feet under next door – Eadie muddles her way through.

Arriving in Manchester as a student in the late 1980s, Eadie confronts a busy, gritty Victorian metropolis a far cry from the small Garden City she's left behind. Soon enough she experiences a novel freedom she never imagined and it's seductive. She can be who she wants to be, do as she pleases, and no one back home needs to know. As Manchester embraces the dizzying, colourful euphoria of Rave counterculture, Eadie is swept along, blithely ignoring danger and reality. Until, one night, her past comes hurtling at her with ramifications which will continue into her adult life.

Now, as the new Millennium beckons, Eadie is turning 30 with a marriage in tatters. She must travel back to where she once lived for a funeral she can't quite comprehend.

Fabulous Freya

I really didn’t know what to expect. The story was so nostalgic. The just loved the fact that Eadie was just off centre. The character frustrated me at times then I had to remind myself she was growing up as I was listening and without spoilers she had several lightbulb moments.
I would highly recommend.

Journey in time

Loved this story which took us from childhood to adulthood living each period building picture perfect images along the way. Wanted it to go on forever and felt bereft when this beautiful story concluded. Another great Freya North book. I will read again after a few months when undoubtedly I will find aspects missed on first reading and love it again.

Ah excellent listen

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The story is so well written with great characterisation and brought so beautifully to life through the excellent narration! I felt strangely bereft of Eadie's life/world when it finished and so now begins the wait for the next book!

Highly recommend.

One of the best narrators I've heard

It doesn't matter how good a book is, if the narrator isn't up to the job its a disaster. Amanda's narration was perfect. It felt like she was the main character telling me her story, not just someone reading a book as some others do.

The story was unusual. The characters all had time to develop, they were all plausable and likeable. I was even left with a sense of understanding and empathy towards the 'bad guy'.

I found myself drawn into Eadie's world, even in tears at one point. I'm the same age as her, so many of the cultural references were nostalgic.

I very much enjoyed listening and may try other books by the author. I will definitely listen to anything else Amanda Abbington narrates, she was brilliant.

Heartwarming and beautifully written

The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne is a beautifully written, dual timeline novel following Eadie Browne's growth from young child to thirty-year-old woman.

The scenes alternate between her adult self, and her as a schoolchild, then university student. Something is going on in her adult life that's kept a mystery for the first two-thirds of the book, lending a sense of intrigue. As Eadie's childhood and adolescence unfolds, we know these must be related to whatever's happening to her as an adult, but I had no idea what, until the surprise was revealed, and it really was a surprise.

All the characters are fantastically created and I cared about every one of them. The setting and era are characters in themselves and Eadie's school and home life, then university years in later eighties/early nineties Manchester, are so vividly drawn, I felt as though I was there with her.

Freya North's beautiful way with words made this such a warm, moving book. I cried in places and smiled from ear to ear in others.

Amanda Abbington narrated it perfectly. I was totally immersed and sorry when it finished. Thank goodness Freya has another 14 books to read! Well done Freya. Another fantastic book, which will not disappoint your fans.

Loved it

The excellent narration and the beautiful writing makes this book feel so real that you feel you are there living it yourself as if it is ‘your’ story. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it surely makes you think…….
