About this listen

'I couldn’t put it down!' Sarah Morgan

The uplifting new story of fresh starts and second chances from the Sunday Times bestselling author Erica James

After a long and seemingly happy marriage, Louisa is stunned when her husband Kip suddenly asks for a divorce. He’d never seemed unhappy – and they’ve raised three children together.

For months, Kip has been secretly seeing a younger woman – and if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s the woman who broke their youngest son’s heart.

Now Kip is moving out and embarking on a new life with Zoe, and Louisa is left to pick up the pieces. Their beloved family home, Charity Cottage, is up for sale, and tensions are running high.

Yet, despite the betrayal and anger, when Louisa lays eyes on what might be a unique and welcoming new home, she feels a first glimmer of hope that life might be taking a turn for the better.

And while Louisa is making exciting plans, Kip finds himself facing challenges of his own and begins to learn that living the dream may not be as simple as he thought…

‘Wonderful on characterisation and family dynamics, and done very deftly, with that wry humour of hers. I was very entertained by her clever, tongue-in-cheek plotting’ Marian Keyes

Such a lovely easy listen. Family relationships at their best and worst. Well narrated. Beautiful descriptions.

A charming story of family life

This really reminded me of parts of my family and it was so nice to read about people trying to forgive.

Wonderful book!

I enjoyed the narration and I listened to the end as overall it was well written. What I found difficult to find believable were some of the character in this book especially the ever so saintly wife. Not only does she seem to sail along with being dumped and potentially splitting her family after years of marriage she embraces the affair and the woman she was left for quite suddenly, Then miraculously another eligible man her age and single turns up one day on her doorstep. And they all live happily ever after in a too unrealistic ending.

Too good to be true

it's story of modern day life sometimes it dwell a little too much on one of the characters but overall it gave a good clear View and left you leaving want to go back to see what happened next to that character

a true reflection of modern day life

This isn’t my usual genre of novels, but it was on offer so I gave it a whirl.
It started off at a good pace and the story line was interesting. But I eventually got fed up with the characters.
The women are either insufferably saintly and full of wisdom or they act like spoilt brats.
The men are mostly pathetic and also act like spoilt brats. But all are brought to heel by the good deeds of the irreproachable Louisa.
I gave it three stars as I did listen to the end and I accept that it just wasn’t for me.

I listened to this book in record time. The reader was excellent, giving each character a distinct voice in a subtle way. Great characters and very original storyline, but perhaps the ending was too perfect!!

Unputdownable.

I liked the story of a what is called a dysfunctional family that is as ordinary as ours. A good ending that is almost impossible in many families would give food for thoughts.

A great voice for different roles

A beautifully crafted book. I liked getting to know the characters and their lives. Some of the storylines seemed a little far fetched, but perhaps that just reflects how I would have coped in their situations and after all it is a work of fiction.

Emotional and well developed book

The story captured my interest immediately and didn’t disappoint. Loved all the characters and how the story unravelled.

Beautifully written

I resonated with the storyline - the husband wants to leave his wife on Boxing Day - I've been the wife in that situ! The book looks at the impact on all who are involved. It didn't deviate - not too much scene description which often gets in the way of the story, so none of that. On with the characters and their relationships which are so believable who had proper intetesting conversations. No dull moments. Beautifully narrated, with great voice characterisation.
I just would have liked more insight into Louisa's thoughts on her marriage and their intimacy.
Chapters kept on coming - in a good way.
Great to hear/tead a lovely English story mentioning Boxing Day!
