About this listen

'I couldn’t put it down!' Sarah Morgan

The uplifting new story of fresh starts and second chances from the Sunday Times bestselling author Erica James

After a long and seemingly happy marriage, and a wonderful family Christmas, Louisa is stunned when husband Kip asks for a divorce on Boxing Day. He’d never seemed unhappy – and they’ve raised three children together.

For months, Kip has been secretly seeing a younger woman – and if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s the woman who broke their youngest son’s heart.

Now Kip is moving out and embarking on a new life with Zoe, and Louisa is left to pick up the pieces. Their beloved family home, Charity Cottage, is up for sale, and tensions are running high.

Yet, despite the betrayal and anger, when Louisa lays eyes on what might be a unique and welcoming new home, she feels a first glimmer of hope that life might be taking a turn for the better.

And while Louisa is making exciting plans, Kip finds himself facing challenges of his own and begins to learn that living the dream may not be as simple as he thought…

‘Wonderful on characterisation and family dynamics, and done very deftly, with that wry humour of hers. I was very entertained by her clever, tongue-in-cheek plotting’ Marian Keyes

Wonderful book!

This really reminded me of parts of my family and it was so nice to read about people trying to forgive.

A charming story of family life

Such a lovely easy listen. Family relationships at their best and worst. Well narrated. Beautiful descriptions.

The Ideal Husband

This isn’t my usual genre of novels, but it was on offer so I gave it a whirl.
It started off at a good pace and the story line was interesting. But I eventually got fed up with the characters.
The women are either insufferably saintly and full of wisdom or they act like spoilt brats.
The men are mostly pathetic and also act like spoilt brats. But all are brought to heel by the good deeds of the irreproachable Louisa.
I gave it three stars as I did listen to the end and I accept that it just wasn’t for me.

Emotional and well developed book

A beautifully crafted book. I liked getting to know the characters and their lives. Some of the storylines seemed a little far fetched, but perhaps that just reflects how I would have coped in their situations and after all it is a work of fiction.

Beautifully written

The story captured my interest immediately and didn’t disappoint. Loved all the characters and how the story unravelled.

Not many likeable characters but a really good story

Well, from Kip the selfish, to Louisa the self sacrificing and Zoe the self sabotaging selfish emotionless damaged and damaging person etc. A lot of them desperately need therapy. There were only two characters to really like! However the story was a good one and I did keep listening to the end.

Not my thing

I knew from the cover it wasn’t my usual genre but I often have to listen to free or buy deal of the day as filler between credits - it’s obviously a hit and miss strategy.

It’s incredibly middle class with zero grit and even the drama doesn’t feel like drama - I kept waiting for something more but once it became apparent nothing else would happen I persisted just to get to the end.

It’s like a self help book written into a novel - man leaves wife for woman half her age, treats both woman like rubbish then can’t handle it when things don’t go smoothly. Yet it’s the wife / female characters who have to be incredibly empathetic and balanced and still pander to this ridiculous man for the greater good.

Yes it’s great to be balanced and be the bigger person but it’s basically middle class divorce through rose tinted specs.

It’s too long and repetitive in parts, and over explains everything. That said, once I’d got over being annoyed at this premise and it was nearly over, I tried to take it for what it was and felt slightly more generous towards it in the end.

Great different story

It was a different storyline which was great the characters totally plausible and very quickly you became part of the story, a nice easy listen but a great story would thoroughly recommend.
