About this listen
Loch is seeking revenge. It would help if she wasn’t in jail. The plan: To steal a priceless elven manuscript that once belonged to her family, but is now in the hands of the most powerful man in the Republic. To do so, Loch - former soldier, former prisoner, and current fugitive - must assemble a crack team of magical misfits that includes a cynical illusionist, a shape shifting unicorn, a repentant death priestess, a talking magical war hammer, and a lad with seemingly no skills. This crack team of misfits will help her break into the floating fortress of Heaven’s Spire and the vault that holds her family’s treasure - all while eluding the unrelenting pursuit of Justicar Pyvic, whose only mission is to see the law upheld. What could possibly go wrong?

The narrator does good voices for each of the characters but when she's simply narrating it sounds like she's trying to seduce your ears! Every sentence trails off into a croaky whisper. Once you notice it, it gets really, really annoying. She also uses strange pronunciations so "beer" sounds like "bear", "guards" sounds like "gods" and "sneer" sounds like "snare"! I genuinely though Kail was calling for God's help in the opening scene!
As for the story it was fine. As others said it's in a similar vein to Lies of Locke Lamora and Patrick Rothfuss stories but I didn't enjoy it as much. (I kept picturing the "Loch" in this story as a man because of having read the above book and then getting confused when the narrator croaked "she". ) I found my attention wandering a few times and found it difficult to remember who was who.
I downloaded all 3 books in the series so I will give them a go and see if the story gets any better (even though t is the same narrator!)
Annoying Vocal Fry

Group chemistry just missed the mark as not enough time for them to play around with each other. Perhaps a story that would work better as a film or TV mini series. Th
Still I enjoyed enough to want to continue the series and I think the ending is solid. I just wish the characters had been given more time to shine
A fun Romp that reads more like a film

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A better storyWould you ever listen to anything by Patrick Weekes again?
NoWhat does Justine Eyre bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
She reads beautifully, but even that was not enough to make this interestingYou didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
NoAny additional comments?
This is a confusing litany of characters, one even more unlovable than the next. But this is only my personal opinion and taste. Maybe someone else will enjoy the story. I do not like to belittle anyone's effort. It just does not fall in my tasteA really awful book
