About this listen

Two brothers. Two different journeys. The same hope of a magnificent future.

At twenty-nine, Jake D'Arcy has finally got his life just right. Job with prospects: check. Steady girlfriend: check. Keeping his exhausting, boisterous family at bay: check. So why isn't he happier?

When his confident, much-adored younger brother Trick comes out as gay to a rapturous response, Jake realises he has questions about his own repressed bisexuality, and that he can't wait any longer to find his answers.

As Trick begins to struggle with navigating the murky waters of adult relationships, Jake must confront himself and those closest to him. He's beginning to believe his own life could be magnificent, if he can be brave enough to make it happen.

Joe Jamieson is such an excellent narrator but he couldn’t make this book be any better than average. Confusing characters with no real sense of plot. Poor ending but I didn’t invest enough to care what really happened to them going forward.

Great listen with realistic absorbing characters. Held my attention and had to ration my listening. Highly recommended.

Good story

I really enjoyed this book. It treads the line I want in an LGBT story - plenty of laughter, tugged heartstrings and an ending that at least leaves room for hope rather than slipping into despair or death (high bar, I know!).
But I also really like its breadth away from just one or two central characters to look at the different relationships and people.
The family/sibling dynamic is achingly, hauntingly real to me as a repressed millennial with a much louder and apparently more sure of themselves younger sibling. And while I naturally identify most with introverted millennial and repressed oldest child Jake, its refreshing to see the teenagers portrayed as relatively whole people with real legitimate feelings and perspectives.
This story has so many characters that get to be more complex than their 2D archetype. They get to be messy and imperfect and human.

Really enjoyed

A very different book compared to what I usually listen to about A family and their friends. It felt true and honest.

The main characters are the two brothers and their relation to each other or rather the lack there of. It’s easy to draw wrong conclusions about people when you assume things based on behavior and lack of communication.

The only thing that was a bit difficult for me to grasp was that it was written from various points of views. But at the same time it gave the story a broader perspective.

The narration is brilliant!

A sincere story about family and friends

Interesting to see bisexuality portrayed in its reality. I love Joe as a narrator. The story is enjoyable albeit sometimes uncomfortable, such is life.

I enjoyed the perspective

I thought I was a nice idea to explore 2 brothers going through their own journeys of discovery and bringing them together at the end

Trials and tribulations of 2 brothers

A powerful story with believable and well-drawn characters, superbly narrated. I was sad when it ended because Jake and Trick had become like real friends.

I didn’t want it to end

Clever, funny and witty! I can’t wait to see where he takes this next. There’s going to be a next one right?

Brilliant read!

I've read more than a couple of LGBT themed books dealing homophobia and ignorance surrounding sexuality, towards a gay character. This is the first time I I can remember it being about bisexuality, and what bisexuals go through. I found myself feeling sorry for Jake, and the way he was often treated by his family. I felt like this book took a realistic approach (not a Disney one) to a young man who is still discovering who he is, and it's more than just his sexuality, but who he is as a friend and as a son, brother, etc. I'm missing a lot out about the plot intentionally because I'm not that skilled at leaving reviews without spoiling something. So I have tried to keep it broad and vague.
However, I enjoyed this story, and would recommend it for others.

Fun, realistic and important...
