Amazing narration

I really liked the first one, and while there were moments that slowed in this, it was still full of twists and turns. A great story. The narrator does the voices really well and her expression was perfect.

Just an amazing narrative and performance of the story, I loved every second and can't wait to listen to the next book!

Mixed feelings

Where to start. There were bits of this book I liked and bits that I hated. This book was a real struggle for me which surprised me as I thoroughly enjoyed the first two. I found myself having to have days long breaks from it. The word “precisely” was used so many times, as was the same with the first two books, that I actually thought I was going to tear my hair out! The word is said so many times that if I never hear it again in this lifetime or my next 3 million incarnations it will be too soon! Dear God it drove me crazy! It’s got to the point where I’m so bothered by it that I honestly don’t know if I can finish the series. The word “battle” was also overused. Every fight they had was a “battle” and it just never felt like one to me.
A lot of the book baffled me. Elander drained nearly all of the life force from Veren in the second book and yet here he was at the start right as rain. Cas was told that she could transfer the death magic to someone else and chose not to. I don’t understand why she just didn’t transfer it back to Elander. Problem solved. She knew that using death magic was killing Elander and yet she kept using it. Kept wanting to use it. That just didn’t make sense to me. I didn’t enjoy any of the interactions with the elves and couldn’t understand why Cass even wanted an alliance with them, despite her having nothing to offer in return, when they were themselves getting protection from the mistward elves. By the time we got to the end I really couldn’t have cared if everyone apart from Elander had died. And he did die! If anyone can explain to me how he came back to life, because it certainly wasn’t explained in the book, I’d be very grateful.
The narration by Jesse Valinsky was very good. She has distinct character voices which I like. If I wasn’t sure on a book I’d probably give it a go just because she was the narrator. She’s definitely one of my favourite narrators.
I have the other two books in this series but genuinely don’t know if I’ll listen to them. Maybe a break from the series is needed and then I’ll feel the desire to finish them. Hopefully this is just the weakest book of the series and I’ll love the last two as much as I did the first two.
