About this listen

Best-selling author Jodi Taylor returns with a brand-new Chronicles of St Mary's short story.

Like a smaller and much scruffier Greta Garbo - finally - Markham speaks!

It's Christmas and time for the first (and almost certainly last) St Mary's Annual Children's Christmas Party - attendance compulsory, by order of Dr Bairstow. Discovered practising his illegal reindeer dance and poo-dropping routine, our hero, along with fellow disaster magnets Peterson and Maxwell, is dispatched to Anglo-Saxon England to discover the truth about Alfred and the cakes. In his own words, our hero reveals Major Guthrie's six-point guide to a successful assignment and the Security Section's true opinion of the History Department. And of historians in general. And of one historian in particular.

And, just to be clear, it is time travel, for God's sake. Forget all that pretentious 'investigating major historical events in contemporary time' rubbish. This is history without the capital H. Because this is the way the Security Section rolls!

Refreshing to hear a story from the POV of Markham. Puts a different spin on the St Mary's character's

Jodi Taylor never fails to make me smile. No out right tummy wrenching laughter in this one but still amusing. It is only 90 minutes long I am confident book 8 will bring us some side splitting moments.

shame that Zara Ramm not narrating

shame that Zara Ramm not narrating. I was expecting the superb Markham accent having got used to her through the series. It was good narration but would have been better with continuity of having Zara perform it as her narration has brought the series to life on the audio books

More From Markham Please

This was a great little treat not just from St Mary's but from Markham, the man himself. I really hope we can be treated to more of this and I can't wait for the next book in the series.

King Alfred and the burnt cakes

Another enjoyable short story. Not so keen on the narrator, though as it was Markham's story I can understand.

A thoroughly entertaining short story.

Telling the story from Markhams perspective, offers a fresh, yet funny, take on the adventures of St Mary's.

Different narrator - not the Markham we know and love

Such a shame the male narrator hadn't listened to Zara Ramm and her narration/accents for the characters. It was very off-putting for Markham to not have a Norfolk accent, but half-hearted attempt at a London one.

All the other stories in this series so far have been narrated by Zara Ramm and have been brilliant. She could've done another great job, so why change?

Brilliant short story

Really enjoyed this short story. It was much better than I thought it was going to be. For anyone who likes time travel with humour this is the book for you. Highly recommend. Great narration.
