About this listen

"When a man escapes alive, he has a chance to survive."

In the unforgiving docklands of east London, young orphan William must do all he can to survive. Like the other ‘wharf rats’, his life of petty crime is not a choice; it’s a necessity. But William’s misdeeds won’t remain hidden for long. When the boy unknowingly steals from a murderous pirate captain, escape is his only option. He is forced to stow away and begin a life that will take him to the far side of the world; a life as a soldier of the East India Company.

A good storyline, taking an interesting slant on the campaign in India. Once again, the author finds ways of injecting interest into the book through a variety of details that others who have covered the same period have missed. This originality separates this book from its peers, making it an enjoyable listen. The narration is good, matching the quality of the storyline. If there was a point of slight annoyance, the constant references to the hero's desire to escape the army he had just joined would be it. There is no value in these references as it is obvious they will not be acted upon since that would kill the story, which would no longer be a saga.

A good start

It’s funny, I recently commented to someone that a book set within the East India company is needed and this has beat me to it. Enjoyable book, nice balance of explanation and action, and good pace. Hope there’s several more.

Narration is good, sounds a lot like Martin Freeman despite it not being.

Enjoyable listen

Thoroughly enjoyed this listen. The narrator did a brilliant job and the story kept me gripped. Made a nice change away from my usual Hosker books, as usual he doesn’t disappoint.

Great book!

characters are superb, but more important is the historical accuracy in what is a work of fiction. fascinating and informative, and a great story to boot...

currently my favourite author...

Poorly developed characters, unrealistic dialogue and a weak plot line. Countless unnecessary repetitions that a half asleep editor would have sorted out got really irritating until I was more focused on predicting the next of these than following the story. I was nearly convinced this was the product of a beta AI programme - I’m still not sure.

Really needed…a lot.
