About this listen

Julius Caesar has taken his legions north into mighty battles with the Gallic tribes. But as his successes mount, overwhelming ambition and new alliances begin to threaten his friendship with Marcus Brutus, brother-in-arms and fellow warrior. Although the conquest of Gaul has made Caesar a hero all over again, his victories on the battlefield cause still more rivalries at home. And ultimately Caesar and Brutus will have to choose whether to cross the Rubicon - together or singly - and to take the fight to Rome itself.©2005 Conn Iggulden (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Love the story but wish the reader wouldn't change

Epic tale set in ancient Rome. Hard to adapt to a new voice actor though

Oh the name mangling in the reading.

A good attempt at bring Caesar to life, with liberties within the point of reason.
The reading of key names in the story was awful

Narrator change killed the story!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The series has been most enjoyable - until now!
With Books 1 and 2, I couldn't wait for the next chapter...the narrator kept a nice flow, and pronouned things correctly (as common consensus believes them pronounced)...but then they changed him?!
I believe that the story in this book is also exciting enough that I am still hoping to get to the end, in spite of the new narrator...but it has become a chore rather than a pleasure.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Narrator either did no research or has a speech impediment....either way it is disappointing.
He has a nice pitch and tone....but his pronunciation of key words is awful.
Regrettably, it is very distracting and eventually becomes my focus each time I turn it back on, rather than the story being told.
This is frustrating because it's been a good series and an interesting story.
Famous historical characters, such as Octavian and Servilia were pronouned 'Octahwean' and 'Suhwehlea'?
These are not exactly minor characters, and so get mentioned repeatedly and often (and badly).
Add to this the units of men called Velites...yet pronouned 'Wellites'...presumably for their "Welocity" when engaging the enemy?!

I spend my time waiting for the next mistake rather than enjoying the tale.

Did EMPEROR: The Field of Swords, Book 3 (Unabridged) inspire you to do anything?

Given that this narrator has also undertaken the reading of Book 4, this has inspired me to READ THE BOOK for myself and save my sanity.
If they rework Books 3 & 4 with Mr Glenister as narrator, then I will come back.

Any additional comments?

PLEASE.....BRING BACK Mr GLENISTER!

a continuation of a classic

I love this series however since the reader changes it is hugely distracting hearing the names of characters you've gotten to know pronounced differently or incorrectly.

Ruined by narater

First two books were fantastic, the story was brilliant and gripped me to the point I'd sit listening and forgetting the hours. Again this books story is great however the narrator has destroyed the feeling of the first two books. The way the names are pronounced is horrific and completely different from the first two. From a gritty and enthralling listen to a pompous arse. Find myself getting more annoyed throughout and missing a lot just trying to pass this narrator!

What a shame

Mispronunciation, little inflection, pauses in the wrong places. After listening to 1 & 2, this was a big disappointment, and it will continue as the same narrator in book 4. As usual Conn leaves you wanting more….. excellent storytelling …. shame on whoever replaced the narrator from the 1st two books

Terrible Narration

The story is good, however the narrator makes this really hard to sit through.

Names in the book

I understand that sometimes you need to change readers within a series but could you please make sure they at least get the names right when it happens. it's annoying when most the names change.

Best regards
Martin

Really strong story spoilt by questionable narration

I was looking forward to this 3rd in the series book but although the plot line is up to the standard of the first 2 the narrator on this book let the side down.
The pronunciation of some of the main characters’ names is markedly different and off putting to anything that I have seen/ heard on stage, TV, DVD or cinema. Examples include OctaRvian, for Octavian, PompAy for Pompey, CaRto for Cato but worst of the lot SerWEELIA for Servillia. The names, all key characters, necessarily crop up frequently and spoilt my overall enjoyment.
Shame because, among other things, this covers Caesar’s very long campaign in Gaul and his 2 brief visits to Britain, and the chaos that occurred in Rome itself while Caesar was away from the city. All of which is covered so well by an author at the top of his game
