About this listen

The Second World War was turned on its head at the moment Admiral Kolhammer's ultramodern stealth warships were hurled back through time from 2021. But no one could have predicted just how much of a nightmare would ensue.

Only months after the Transition, the great powers scramble to develop the weapons of tomorrow. The year 1942 is now a world of crude jet fighters, monstrous attack helicopters, and unholy dirty bombs - a mongrel technology, born decades prematurely.

Then, in a radical rewriting of history, Japanese forces sweep into Australia, foreign agents begin a campaign of terror in the USA, and Germany prepares for an all-out attack on Britain. The 21st-century forces must resort to the most extreme measures yet and face a future rife with possibilities - all of them apocalyptic.

Picking up from where he left off with Weapons of Choice, John Birmingham shocks and awes us with this gripping second instalment in the Axis of Time trilogy.

I loved the idea of this Book series. However I was a little disappointed in the first one of the series. it was solid enough just not as good as i had hoped. so much so that I didn't go straight into the next edition of the series. Opting to listen to somewhere books instead. I came back to the series only because it was sat in my library and I had nothing else to turn to.
I'm so very glad I came back to it.
This Book really grabbed my attention and the combination off this and the 1st Book in series are everything I wanted this series to be.
excellent writing and I'm going straight into the third book. I can only apologise to the writer for ever doubting him.

Very interesting alternative timeline.

If you could sum up Designated Targets in three words, what would they be?

I have all three of the audio books in this series and got through the them in 1 week.Te way the story develops is well paced and you get a good feel for the story. The way the groups in the books play off against each other is well thought out and the action is exciting. The way the futuristic weapons are used and historical characters portrayed is believable.

good time travel book

This is the second part in the series. Great developments and sets up 3 perfectly.

Brilliant

This is gripping stuff. The action and multiple plot lines kept me wanting to know how it would play out. The attention to detail and accuracy of the multiple WW2 technologies discussed is impressive. The accents of the narrator are good considering the breadth of types he has to cover. I played it at x1.35 speed. Will immediately download the next instalment.

Brilliantly developed alternative history

I'm not a fan of series books which leave you short at the end but it's one is different. it's not so much of a hook to get you to buy the next one but a yearning to complete what is an engaging story. Characters are real, though you have to get past the almost comical female voices and the rather dubious accents, and some of the story threads disappear but the core storyline is imaginative, and - though I can't believe I'm going to say this about such a fanciful idea - totally believable.

Number Two is done - onto the third

Although pretty incredible it does have some innovative features and I am a fan of alternative historical fiction

Engaging

Fascinating and well-paced alternative history/sci-fi story that explores WW2 history and personalties in a clever way. The story mixes lots of military action (and technical detail) with some interesting moral elements. It’s a cracking and fast-moving story that is also surprisingly intelligent for what is in essence a war-action novel. Highly recommended as the second

Great story and narration

I feel like this series should have been based in 2042 or something, the level of tech, idea that a carrier could be named after a president elect. And Harry in the sas? What? I know this was published in 2017 but this is stupid even then. The tech is miles away. Why not make up a grandson of the prince's if you really wanted a royal connection. And the ending of this book is just silly.

Story takes too much disbelief

Narrater spoils the story, by doing silly voices and silly accents such as English welsh Scottish and women
