صدر كتاب "السابق" عام 1920، وكان جبران وقتها مرهقًا بأعمال كثيرة، كنحلة مريضة في حديقة أزهار، كما ورد عنه في رسالته إلى ميخائيل نعيمة. عرّف جبران كتابَه هذا ووضع تحت العنوان الرئيسي السابق عنوان فرعي: حكاياته الرمزيّة وقصائده. وهو كتابه الثاني بالإنكليزية (عن دار كنوف). ظهر "السابق" "كالمجنون" في قَطع صغير، لأن مؤلفه، على حدّ ما قال لماري هاسكل، اعتبر هذا القَطع من شروط الكتاب الأمثل، وقال لها بصدده: "علينا أن نتعلّم كيف ننتقدُ أنفسنا. يرى الشاعر رؤيا وهو في عالم آخر وحين يرجع من عالمه فيحاول أن يقصّ رؤياه قد لا يفلح في بلورتها في قصيدة أو لوحة".
