A woman in her forties is a victim of a suicide bombing at a Jerusalem market. Her body lies nameless in a hospital morgue. Siamo in una città del Nord Italia, durante le feste di fine anno a cavallo del millennio. Rachele Luzzatto è la figlia unica di una facoltosa famiglia ebraica. Da un lato, per prepararsi alla cerimonia del suo Bat Mitzvah, deve impegnarsi nello studio della lingua ebraica, delle preghiere e dei precetti.

Nella settimana che precede la Pasqua, torna in Israele Kaminka, padre di tre figli ormai sposati, e marito di una donna chiusa da anni in manicomio.
