في الوقت الذي بدأ فيه «فويرباخ» أبحاثه في الدين، كان الفلسفة المثالية قد بلغت القمة في عهد التنوير الألماني، خاصةً فلسفة هيجل. وجد فويرباخ نفسه أمام كنيسة معادية للعقل والتقدم، ومتحالفة مع السلطة القمعية الحاكمة. وكان هو يطمح إلى فلسفة تلائم المستقبل، فلسفة بعيدة عن الإدعاءات المثالية، وتتخذ من الإنسان نقطة للانطلاق، تكون قريبة منه ومن تجاربه الملموسة. لذلك أُطلق على فلسفة فويرباخ الناقدة للفكر الديني اسم «الفلسفة المادية الأنثروبولوجية».
