Erstdruck: 1890) schildert Strindberg das Leben des Fischereiinspektors Axel Borg, der auf eine abgelegene Schäreninsel versetzt wird, um die dortige Fischerei zu modernisieren. Die ablehnende Haltung der Inselbewohner und seine eigene, zum Teil überhebliche Selbsteinschätzung, lassen Borg jedoch schon bald immer mehr zum Einzelgänger werden. Borg vereinsamt angesichts der ablehnend eingestellten Bevölkerung zunehmend, bis er ein Liebesverhältnis mit der Sommerfrischlerin Maria eingeht.
