  • Prison, Pain and Purpose - Sam's Path to Recovery
    Dec 21 2024
My guest this week is Sam Lander who hit rock bottom when she was sent to prison. In this episode:- Sam's first drink was in 7th grade and her first drug use (weed) in 8th grade. From there she progressed to heavy substance use, including GHB, cocaine, and meth. She was blackout drinking and using drugs to alter her state of mind.Despite her addiction, she was high functioning – she was a varsity athlete, spinning instructor, and held down various jobs. Her turning point was certainly a dramatic one – a SWAT Raid of her home which led to a 27 month prison sentenceEven in prison she didn’t get cleanEventually Sam accepted that her life was unmanageable and went to rehabShe describes her rehab experience as liberating - experiencing joy and laughter again!.She was sober for 13 years but then had a relapse due to struggles with motherhood, marriage and isolationSam was drinking a bottle of gin a day throughout CovidAs her addiction got worse she lost some people close to her and she finally realised what was blocking her recoveryShe wasn’t doing the work and realised that she was lacking the humility she neededSams relapse after 13 years is such a warning sign to those of us that have clocked up years of sobriety – if we still see alcohol as a way to relieve our struggles then we are at riskThe key is to develop alternative coping mechanism so that we don’t go to our default and seek a way to numb out from our problemsThese days Sam has clocked up more than a year of sobriety, focusing on daily gratitude and service workShe is now a Health Coach and helps women to address their health:- Gut healthHormone imbalances andStress management She combines nutrition, functional lab testing, and personalized programs. She also encourages clean eating, proper supplementation, and weightlifting for sustainable health. She had some advice:- For those struggling: Be vulnerable and admit you need help – there is no shame in seeking support.First-year sobriety struggles: Address gut health, nutrient deficiencies, and underlying issues. For those having sugar cravings: Use natural alternatives like honey, maple syrup, and balanced meals. Her take on exercise is that its key: Start slow, prioritize weightlifting, and integrate daily movement like walking.Sam Offers free health clarity calls to assess needs and recommend lab tests.Contact her via Instagram @seefitliving More Info Tribe Sober membership – you can join up HERE. • Alex finds Claritée
    Dec 14 2024
This weeks guest who is Alex Clapp – Alcohol took Alex to a very dark place but now he’s 2 years sober and running alcohol free events! In this episode:- Alex started drinking heavily as a teenager within a culture that normalized binge drinking.Like many of us he developed a career in a "work hard, play hard" culture, where drinking was integral to fitting inAlex was drinking heavily anyway but when he was faced with a serious health challenge it ramped up furtherHe experienced significant eye health issues leading to partial blindnessBattling with a combination of problematic drinking and depression Alex was beginning to feel suicidalThankfully his 16 year old son turned this mindset around when he expressed a heartfelt need for his fatherAlex went to rehab 3 times – an interesting process…First time he treated it as a “break” to prove to himself that he wasn’t an alcohol – a bit like many of us do with Dry JanuarySecond time he did some deeper work but then made the mistake of thinking that he had “fixed” his inner problem and would be able to drink normally!Third time it stuck when he finally accepted that he had crossed the line into dependence and would never be able to moderate!Alex spoke of the importance of vulnerability, which is not so easy for men who have often been raised to hide their emotions and fix everything! We agreed on the importance of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable which enables us to create alternative coping mechanisms. We also spoke of the importance of having a project in sobriety and Alex has created Claritee, an organization promoting alcohol-free events for corporate and public settings.Alex believes that his events are challenging social norms and will provide people with alternative choices for fun and connectionYou can see some beautiful photo of sober people having fun on Alex website which is https://www.clariteegroup.co.uk/ - I’ll put a link in the shownotesAlex advocates giving back to the community through volunteering and helping charitiesWe agreed that donating to a charity actually lights up the same pathways in our brain that alcohol did!So on that basis here is a plug for our Annual Fundraiser which helps underprivileged children here in South AfricaJust donate whatever you an afford and in addition to getting a buzz you’ll get online and community support for 30 days of your choosing – any 30 day window that suits you between now and the end of Feb More Info Tribe Sober membership – you can join up HERE.
