About this listen

Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded?

Of the three dominant ideologies of the 20th century - fascism, communism, and liberalism - only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism's proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: It trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy, it has given rise to the most far-reaching, comprehensive state system in human history.

Here, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.

Stressful reader.

Frantic reader. Stressful to listen to. Seems that pauses were edited down so the he appeared not to be thinking about what he was reading. Otherwise, a very thought provoking book.

Failing Liberalism

Deneen elaborates on how our liberal system is shot. The fundamental flaw in the system is the noble lie of the regime, which keeps the ruling class absorbed in the legitimisation of the regime and the underclass fed on a weak diet of dead-end jobs with the elusive promise of liberation. Exposed is the truth of the self-serving individual; made absent from any self-governing principle, that could keep them honest. This results in an uncultivated citizen untrained in self- sacrifice. Unfortunately, our universities no longer seek to guide in this regard, unleashing the same corporate irresponsibility and madness over again into the economy from their graduates. But thankfully we have a one-dimensional homogenous culture to rely upon. An ever-expanding nanny state leaves citizens disillusioned. Concurrently running, next to this mess, is our massive depletion of global resources, licensed by the liberal’s ‘war on nature.’ A must read.

What happens if history did not end?

A culture war. Or perhaps a cultural v acultural war. Good contribution to the debate.

Food for thought

An iteresting thesis that was powerfully argued. I found the narration a tad monotonous though

the author shouts loudly

gave up after an hour as the author uses pompous phrases, giving the impression that he needs to shout his message as maybe his point is more nuanced than he wants to let on. maybe it gets better later in the book, but I'm afraid I have run out of patience to find out.

Reading so dreadful it ruined the book

As hard as I tried i couldn't listen beyond the second hour of this audiobook. The reader is truly dreadful. Try the print version instead.
