In Feminism Against Progress, Mary Harrington argues that the industrial-era faith in progress is turning against all but a tiny elite of women. Women's liberation was less the result of human moral progress than an effect of the material consequences of the Industrial Revolution. We've now left the industrial era for the age of AI, biotech and all-pervasive computing. As a result, technology is liberating us from natural limits and embodied sex differences. Although this shift benefits a small class of successful professional women, it also makes it easier to commodify women's bodies, human intimacy and female reproductive abilities.

This is a stark warning against a dystopian future whereby poor women become little more than convenient sources of body parts to be harvested and wombs to be rented by the rich. Progress has now stopped benefiting the majority of women, and only a feminism that is sceptical of it can truly defend female interests in the 21st century.

One of the most comprehensive appraisals of our times I have ever come across. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand our current socio-political landscape with regards to the way that feminism and associated philosophies have developed, and how they can best made relevant to our wellbeing going forwards

I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Meat Lego Gnosticism. Mary manages to tackle some hefty topics without chapters becoming boring, offers advice for prospective parents and has changed my mind on what traditional living can encapsulate as a woman.

This book explains the history of feminism and the sexual revolution and explains why technological "advances" for women have actually been a disaster for women and men's relationships and mental health. Avery insightful book.

Mary Harrington’s ability to place women’s bodies in an analytical and realist history from the pre-industrial era into the future is astonishing. Her writing is concise yet doesn’t lack vigour as a result. The “dis-embedding of family life” is fascinatingly explored and considered in relation to how we, as modern women, have come to this particular point where “progress” is taken for granted (and frighteningly so). Hearing about “progress” and “feminism” is a staple of our lives; but to have the terms thoroughly and very purposefully defined and imbued with meaning was a treat.

I cannot fault a book that has made me consider myself and womanhood not only meaningfully but critically. A must-read that is accessible and rich at the same time.

Very well reasoned. I admit some discomfort occasionally, but never a denial of the facts. I think that the question here is more if the younger people are able to get past the discomfort to a level where they allow the reasoning.
I got the book after seeing Mary in several discussions and am happy I did. What a woman!
