About this listen

The classic World War II thriller from the acclaimed master of action and suspense.

One winter night, seven men and a woman are parachuted onto a mountainside in wartime Germany. Their objective: an apparently inaccessible castle, headquarters of the Gestapo. Their mission: to rescue a crashed American general before the Nazi interrogators can force him to reveal secret D-day plans.

Critic reviews

"A real humdinger. The best MacLean." ( Daily Mirror)
"There is a splendid audacity about Where Eagles Dare, in which a handful of British agents invade an 'impenetrable' Gestapo command post...MacLean offers a real dazzler of a thriller, with vivid action, fine set pieces of suspense and a virtuoso display of startling plot twists." ( The New York Times)

As with all MacLean, rather slow. Good narrator. Ending is a little soporific. All in all a good bedtime story.

A little soporific, but as a bedtime story, good.

Such a dull narrator, with terrible accents. Ruins the wonderful story that gamely tries to shine through.

terrible narrator

Great story from start to finish, lots of twists and turns that allowed the story to keep very interesting.

Well written.

Would you listen to Where Eagles Dare again? Why?

Yes. Because of Oliver`s performance. It is just pure gold. He gets the atmosphere just tight.

What did you like best about this story?

The complex story.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Oliver’s other performances? How does this one compare?

One of his best.

A ice cold thriller

Very enjoyable. A huge fan of the film, I found the book equally good fun. A difficult story to narrate, and the accents were a little weak, and dated. However this did not distract too much from the excellent plot.

I was a big fan of the book and the film when I was a teenager, so I thought I would see if I still liked it many years later. While the plot is very far fetched it’s not worse than most thrillers. However the main premise I realised was very odd, which was about British agents working for the Germans. There is no basis for this in fact and there is no real internal logic for their motivation in the book. However given when it was written it works better as an allegory for the Cold War. There is a rather jokey tone between the main protagonists which was a surprise which was not so evident in the film. Overall I would still happily watch the film. Not so much the book.

Major Smith and his team go into Germany to find out who are the top German spies working in Britain.
Excellent wartime thriller, well narrated by Jonathan Oliver

excellent wartime espionage thriller

Very enjoyable. I had to get used to the way that Mr Oliver read the speech of the senior officer in the plane on the way to Bavaria ( not Major Smith), and also Sheaffer, sometimes, but on the whole i really enjoyed it and was reluctant to put it on pause when i had to. I like this story of Alistair Maclean. I saw the film when it came out ( very early in 1970's ?) with a group from my church, and i often watch the dvd i have of the film.
The film follows the book very closely as far as i can tell, which a few small exceptions.
