I have read this book several times now it is such a good believable story I will probably read it again in a couple of years

Alistair MacLean one of the truly great authors

MacLean is a master at describing the effects of cold without straying too far from the plot and you may want a warm blanket round you as you listen to the all-too-realistic narrative. The choice of narrator has been well-considered and suits the tone of the book.

An aeroplane lands off course onto the desolate ice-covered Greenland wasteland. The survivors are rescued by the members of a small scientific team which is starting to run low on supplies. They could radio for help if only one of the survivors hadn't broken the radio. A life and death journey through Arctic conditions begins, with inadequate supplies. And there's a murderer amongst them.

One of the author's best..

This thriller ticks along solidly enough. The Characters are a bit generic, especially if you've read Guns of Navarone, you'll recognise the blueprints. Mallory and his team have far more depth though. The female characters are either cardboard stereotypes or damsels in distress. The villain though, is one of Maclean's best. The setting is exciting and reminds me of survival movies where the protagonists battling the elements and a murderous villain.

Decent thriller.

A spy thriller that throughout, the listener can feel the intense cold, feel the frostbite, feel the despair that the characters are experiencing for themselves. A gripping storyline throughout right up until the last word. Brilliantly narrated. A first class audible book.

Spy thriller

Despite being written so many years ago, this remains an exciting adventure story. Where the attitudes of yesteryear do show through , its almost charming. But nothing detracts from Alistair McLeans ability to write a cracking good story.

Aged well

This is an exceptional early work by Alistair Maclean, believably describing a hazardous 1959 trek across the Greenland ice cap, in a failing pre-war tractor and in the company of an unidentified murderer or murderers, in possession of a stolen Cold War secret. Great stuff! Why they never made a movie out of it while they could (i.e. before woke and inclusivity) I cannot imagine.

Literally, a chilling thriller!

My Dad gave me this to read but it’s the school holidays so there was no chance! Decided to buy it on here so I could listen whist I was enslaved to my two daughters. I kept having to rewind as I’d gotten bored of the story and kept switching off to it. I listen to a log of audiobooks as I don’t get time to read anymore and this is the first one I’ve ever struggled to get through.

Not for me I’m afraid
