About this listen

In 1975 art historian Leo Hertzberg discovers an extraordinary painting by an unknown artist in a New York gallery. He buys the work and tracks down its creator, Bill Weschler, and the two men embark on a lifelong friendship.

This is the story of their intense and troubled relationship, of the women in their lives and their work, of art and hysteria, love and seduction and their sons - born the same year but whose lives take very different paths.

I loved it because I learned so much about the life of the artist. I enjoyed the way the plot developed and grew. This is a great novel for anyone who loves art.

A well written story full of resonant symbols and we'll crafted characters. Worth a listen.

Loved parts of this novel.

Absolutely riveting. Fantastic piece of literature and pitch perfect narration. Such a great work I only wish I had read the book rather than 'cheat' with audio. I will certainly buy the author's other books.

Best audiobook ever.

I'm not quite sure why some people think it's so utterly brilliant. Must be me. The narrator sounded too old for a 55 year old. That's young! Too obsessed with himself. Wouldn't want to meet any of them. I am, however, reading it again. Trying to see the gems.

Very strange book.

Sadly I couldn’t bear the narrators voice so gave up after an hour, nothing about this book made we want to persevere. Sorry I wasted a credit on it!

Leaden, clumsy, pretentious.
This book is weighed down by its own very obvious ambitions. It quickly becomes clear what it wants to be: insightful, intriguing, ambiguous, sexy and intelligent. A novel of ideas perhaps? But it is none of these things. It is just stupid; cluttered with implausible, or perhaps just insufferable, characters having ridiculous conversations/relationships/thoughts. Their awfulness and that of the writing was almost enjoyable in a 'so bad it's good' sort of way.
But in the end the authors desperate yearning for depth became unbearable for me.

A dizzyingly stupid book

Sorry but I couldn’t see the point of this tale.
I really don’t like to hear American voices reading either. I think that’s a barrier to understanding and enjoying a book.

Pretty dreadful
