About this listen
The Alchemist meets The Three Musketeers - with card tricks. A brilliant origin story of adventure, wit and philosophy to enrapture devotees as well as newcomers to the Spellslinger series.
Ferius Parfax has a simple plan: kill every last inhabitant of the spell-gifted nation that destroyed her people, starting with the man who murdered her parents. Killing mages is a difficult and dangerous business, of course, but when she meets the inimitable and extraordinary Durrall Brown she discovers that physical strength is not the only way to defeat evil of all kinds.
So Ferius undertakes to study the ways of the Argosi: the loosely knit tribe of tricksters known for getting the better of even the most powerful of spellcasters. But the Argosi have a price for their teachings, and by the time Ferius learns what it is, it may be too late.
Perfect for fans of The Dark Tower, Firefly, Guardians of the Galaxy, Terry Pratchett, Ben Aaronovitch and Jim Butcher.

In general i don’t get along with female narrators doing fantasy, they just don’t click with me. However having said that i thought Kristin Atherton did a great job, she managed to give each character their own voice and her delivery was smooth and flawless. I loved the story partly because i love that world but also because it was interesting and gripping and of course gave me more information about one of my favourite characters in fantasy. Cant wait for the follow up book..

Great addition to the Spellslinger series

I feel like this book is much darker than the Kellen books and is even more absorbing cause of it; there’s so much more pain and despair and doesn’t have the added levity of the Kellen novels to ease the tension. I don’t know how Sebastien does it; he claims he wrote these books after the realisation he wasn’t “special” in the way of fantasy novels, but I’m pretty sure he’s using some sort of silk magic on the readers. There’s a line in the epilogue that almost ripped my heart out…!
Ok, so after listening to Joe narrate all 6 of the other books, I was a little disappointed to spot a change of narrator, but very quickly I realised it was definitely the right choice for these Argosi books. Kristen is amazing! She pulls you into the story with great atmosphere and character voices and she has a whisper that is filled with such power and emotion it’s like nothing I’ve come across before.
I honestly think this is my favourite book in the series now (I think it’s best listened to after completing the Kellen storyline) and can’t wait to jump straight into the next one.
