About this listen

After bursting onto the fantasy scene with his acclaimed debut novel, Elantris, and following up with his blockbuster Mistborn trilogy, Brandon Sanderson proves again that he is today’s leading master of what Tolkien called “secondary creation”, the invention of whole worlds, complete with magics and myths all their own.

Warbreaker is the story of two sisters, who happen to be princesses, the god king one of them has to marry, the lesser god who doesn’t like his job, and the immortal who’s still trying to undo the mistakes he made hundreds of years ago.

Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren’s capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people.

By using breath and drawing upon the color in everyday objects, all manner of miracles and mischief can be accomplished. It will take considerable quantities of each to resolve all the challenges facing Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris; Susebron the god king; Lightsong, reluctant god of bravery, and mysterious Vasher, the Warbreaker.

Gives depth to stormlight but also a great standalone

A great small story than brings very useful information to the overall cosmere. If you think about stormlight, Vasher is slowly turning into obi wan…. A good story that adds depth to other characters. If you like other Sanderson books this is a must read

a good listen, with flaws

its well read with good actors. but the background noise overshadows the narrator making him hard to hear. i do wish they would reduce the volume of the sounds when they are speaking.

wonderful performance.

I am a fan of the original Warbreaker book, the original narrator painted the world with his performance, so i was rather hesitant to try this dramatised version. The voice actors did a wonderful job, they stayed true to the characters, the extra sound effects and music was seamlessly placed that it did not disturb the performance. truly enjoyable and worth the price. i recommend you give it a try.

Pleasantly surprised

I had a free credit and love Brandon Sanderson books, but have always struggled with the heavy American accents on the audio books. Read that this was a dramatised version and I’d already read the book, so thought ‘why not!’. Very well read and the different voice actors really brought the book more to life. Would definitely listen to more like this as you can’t get every book read by Stephen Fry!!

Terrible audioscape

Love the story, but the foley and the music, the "movie in your mind" is poor, repetitive, not appropriate to the story and far, Far, FAR too loud, drowning the voices more often than enhancing the experience.

The main female performer can't make up her mind on her accent, becoming a strange cross between Scottish, Jamaican and Egyptian.

The main male is intent on a dark, doom-laden voice that again, isn't appropriate to the story but at least doesn't change to other accents

Horrible

Too many different horrible sounds all at once. So disappointed, couldn't get past the first 20 mins.
