About this listen

A coffin is dug up by builders in the grounds of a historic convent - inside is the body of a young nun.

In a city as old as London, the discovery is hardly surprising. But when scratch marks are found on the inside of the coffin lid, Detective Jane Tennison believes she has unearthed a mystery far darker than any she's investigated before.

However, not everyone agrees. Tennison's superiors dismiss it as a historic cold case, and the Church seems desperate to conceal the facts from the investigation.

It's clear that someone is hiding the truth and perhaps even the killer. Tennison must pray she can find both - before they are buried forever....

In Unholy Murder, Tennison must lift the lid on the most chilling murder case of her career to date....

After listening to the other books in this Tennison series, I thought this story was the most intriguing.Jane has moved Stations and has bought her own house . I liked the fact that the case she is working on runs parallel to her personal life, so the listener becomes involved with a mixture of her work and social life, rather than just the case and life at the Station dominating the story. There are also quite a few humorous parts in this one. Overall, I thought this audible had quite a few differences from the previous ones, possibly because the main character has climbed the ranks and is less overpowered by her team.I also thought that the plot relating to the Convent had a good historic feel and kept the listener guessing. The Narrator was very good ,especially when speaking as the central character, however I could not hear the diction properly when she tried to speak Maltese as the Priest or French when they were dining out! It was definitely an audible that you couldn't stop listening to and held your attention throughout.

I found it hard to turn this audio book off. It was so professionally narrated by Rachel Atkinson, a joy to listen to. The storyline was gripping with well rounded believable characters. I highly recommend this audio book.

Totally absorbing.

I love Lynda La Plante thrillers but this wasn’t as gripping as usual, I still enjoyed it. Really well read with all the different characters.

Different setting for Tennison.

Workmen on the site of a former Catholic convent and children’s home discover a metal coffin on supposedly cleared and deconsecrated ground. The police from Bromley CID, including DS Jane Tennison and DC Boon working under Jane’s old colleague DI Stanley, are called to the scene and when the coffin is opened at the mortuary, they are all shocked to find the body of a nun who seems to have died in chilling circumstances. Whilst Jane unwisely embarks on a relationship with developer Nick Durham, local priest Father Christopher Floridia proves helpful but Bishop Meade and Archbishop Malone are the opposite, and past conflicts and mistrust also come to light between the church and Jane’s senior officer DCS Barnes. Battling opposition and misdirection at every turn, eventually the detectives are able to identify the woman in the coffin and set up a murder investigation but no one expects what a huge can of very distasteful worms they are about to open.
Times might be changing in some ways – Jane meets London’s first female forensic pathologist and she herself is gaining more respect from the male officers around her - but here the author very accurately reflects the power of the church in those days to maintain a cloak of secrecy and the great lengths those in charge would go to in order to protect its name and cover up atrocities committed within their walls. It was nice to see Stanley and DS Lloyd (formerly Teflon from the Flying Squad) again in what I think is my favourite story so far in this great series.
I am so pleased to see that, after a number of changes, the series has finally settled on a narrator who is perfect for the role of Tennison and delivers a quality and professional performance that was clear and easy to listen to and held my attention throughout.

My favourite so far.

Excellent audiobook.

Initially disappointed in the narration with some pronunciations such as Dermot with too much emphasis on the mot and I was sure they said Rosemary beads instead of rosary. However, after that the narrative was excellent, Rachel Atkins sounds just like HM’s JT.

Enjoyable listen
