About this listen

A gathering of seven bestselling crime writers at a Scottish Highlands book festival turns deadly in a wickedly dark thriller that pays homage to Agatha Christie's classic murder mysteries, from the bestselling author of The Bonnie Dead.

When legendary crime novelist William MacRae is found dead in suspicious circumstances at his Glasgow home, Police Scotland's premier investigator DCI John Lomond is put on the case.

After discovering a list of seven bestselling authors–all old friends of MacRae's–Lomond and his team head north to the Ullapool Book Festival, where the seven are gathering to remember their fallen friend.

But a vicious storm is closing in. And not everyone, it seems, has fond memories of MacRae. Or each other.

Cut off from the outside world at a remote country home, it doesn't take long for the whisky to flow, old resentments to reignite…and another dead body to appear.

Over the course of one weekend, Lomond must sift through a web of red herrings, secrets, and lies.

One of them is a killer. But can Lomond unmask them before it's too late?

Scotlands Sherlock homes. Fantastic book. It’s my second read from the author and eager to start the next in the series

Enjoyable but a bit flawed

As a stand alone story, this got away with it’s outlandish plot and cliched setting because it was a bit of ‘fun’.
Taking an established, gritty, Scottish detective into an Agatha Christie style scenario was an ok departure to try, but once is enough.
It was like sticking Taggart in Midsomer Murders. It could easily be avoided by DCI Lomond fans, but an ok listen for the completists amongst us!

Gripping from the start

Great storyline. Fantastic reading performance. Scottish accent makes it authentic. Andrew Raymond didn’t disappoint yet again. Hope there will be many more

"The terror of falling.."

This reader's first book by author Andrew Raymond, his second book in the DCI Lomond series. And as a stand alone it worked well. So well that I was captivated from the start. The opening chapters intrigued and pulled me in, as did the whole idea of a crime thriller book's plot being recreated in real life. The writing was good, too, with great characters fizzing with lives of their own: doubts, confusion, joys and sorrows, self opinionated as well as humorous, unhappy, hard working, brave, sometimes a little bit dim but also astute and resolute. In other words, very human. It was all set up to be a really classic closed house murder mystery with benefits. But somehow the story lost itseway, notmuch, but enough to take away that fifth star.of excellence.

I still thoroughly enjoyed this book and have already purchased book one in the series .for my next read: A recommended fun detective, complete with Scottish accents nicely (and understandably) performed by the excellent Angus King

I really enjoyed this, great story, proper whodunnit and I suspected everyone at some point. That last paragraph though, loved it.

Knives Out

Yes, it all got a bit clichéd towards the end and the Agatha Christie styling may not be to every reader’s taste but it had pace, intrigue and some great characters.
I enjoy the relationship between each of the paired detectives and the banter is often fun. I’m glad there isn’t the usual antipathy between DCI and The Super - at least that hackneyed play off of characters is kept out of these stories.
Agreed, it’s not his best but an interesting novel and, of course Angus King delights as ever.
Hope to see the light breaking on John sometime soon. The last paragraph……… emotional and hopeful.

Good ideas but too long.

I really enjoyed the first book in the series and so I was looking forward to the second. However, the story just did not grab me at all. It was over long, and as mentioned in the book itself was reminiscent of an Agatha Christie novel, I’m still going to read the third one as I like the main characters .
