About this listen

A brand-new series from the creator of the DCI Harry McNeil and DI Frank Miller novels. Here comes DCI Sean Bracken.

A killer on the loose.

A killer behind bars.

And a detective caught between them...

Ailsa Connolly was a brilliant psychologist and a respected criminologist.

She was also a serial killer.

Six years ago, DCI Sean Bracken caught her just before he was about to become her seventh victim. Every year on the anniversary of her incarceration, she taunts him with a phone call, giving him one message: "When I get out, I'll kill you."

Now, Bracken has transferred back to Edinburgh from Fife and is thrown into the deep end on his first day back on duty.

There's a killer who is emulating Ailsa, threatening to surpass her body count.

Bracken knows he needs her on board to help him track the killer down, but she's reluctant to get involved.

Then the case takes an unexpected twist, and she agrees to help. But this new killer is taking them down a dark, twisted path, where nobody sees the outcome.

Until it's too late.

Excellent narration!

My first read of a John Carson book, which I chose solely because it was narrated by Angus King. Angus King is particularly suited to narrating this type of book - I highly recommend anything he has narrated.

The story itself was very good. I was a bit confused with characters introduced early in the story, and not really mentioned much throughout the book, and I had forgotten about, then turned up again at the end. I will have to listen again to remind myself how it all came about - no real problem with that as Angus King is such an excellent narrator. That aside I highly recommend this book.

It’s very DCI Jack Logan

Honestly, feels like a rip off of the jack Logan series. Same characters with different names but basically a bit plagiarism (my opinion)

Decent enough but not original

A good read

Carson writes and Angus King narrates. A success all round. I enjoyed the sarcasm and cynicism. Scots Wha Hae!

Abridgement needs work

Entertaining storyline but as with all John Carson novels, it’s been poorly abridged so you end up wondering how the characters know things etc.

Can’t wait for more

I was convinced even before it started after I read who was the narrator. And the story matched my excitement. It was a bit short it missed a few more twists and turns and the time to get used to the characters was too short but I’m sure that will come. Only negative for me that the next books are not on audio yet. But I’m sure they will be soon.

Great complex detective story.

Moves along at a pace, lots of twists and turns and unexpected outcomes. First John Carson book on audible. I look forward to many more. Bracken is a great craggy character. places reminded me of my early work life in Scotland when I lived in Fife.

Excellent book

I stumbled across this book while looking for something to read. I must admit this is an excellent book not only do you have the great Angus King narrating it but it’s also a really great story. I was hooked from the beginning not only is it a great story but also very funny in parts which I love a bout a book.
