I enjoyed reading the story last year (and the series as a whole). Rufus and Mark made a great pair - neither were smooth, urbane MCs; just 2 guys (okay, a dragon and guy), who love academia, books (and after awkwardly dancing around), fall in love.

Rufus Love -I was tickled by the fact that he's the MCs namesake - was great. I enjoyed his voices for each of the characters, the slight inflections for the different emotions. As with all new-to-me narrators, it took me a little while to get use to his cadence, but that's a minor quirk on my part. I hope he's able to perform the rest of the series, he's really good!
Definitely recommend :)

The Red Dragon of Oxford is the first book by this author that I have read and the author won me over as I liked both the plot and the characters.
Mark is in Oxford for the first day when he sees a dragon. And so begins a wonderful book with a mix of university life and the paranormal, peppered with witty banter.
I really loved the descriptions of Oxford, you could really picture the university campus.
Mark soon meets the hot but grumpy librarian Rufus. As a reader, I could feel the chemistry between the two from their first meeting. Mark has a struggle or two as a new grad student, but it was nice to watch him slowly overcome his insecurities.
Despite being a dragon, Rufus loves books more than anything gold, which earns him the disdain of his clan. The dragon code of Rufus' family was well described. I figured Rufus correctly from the beginning and I found him to be a very likable character.
I liked how the story developed and there was plenty of action with the dragons at the end.

As I said, the chemistry between Rufus and Mark was there from the start, there were hot scenes and it was great to see Rufus being very protective of Mark.
The story was generally well told and entertaining. I can't wait to see what happens next!
The narrator, Rufus Love, was also new to me and had a pleasant voice. He gave the characters appropriate voices and managed the changes of perspective quite well.

Overall, this was a good read. Some parts felt rushed, glazed over or not fully developed but despite those set backs, it didn’t hinder my enjoyment.

Rufus was a broody hot librarian who was overlooked and ostracised by his family.

Mark’s background was a bit of a mystery and non existent. There was too much focus on his doctoral education but not much on him as a person. However, that being said, I liked how he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind to various dragons he came across. He stood his ground and defended Rufus.

Cosy academia meets fantasy romance. I can't resist a dragon shifter book, and one that hoards books as a librarian? Sign me up! It's a pretty gentle, cosy read-slash-listen, low on angst (though sweet Rufus has some extreme family hangups) and unexpected in that when I was very very confident that I'd figured out the plot twist the author turned me upside down on my head. Now that I know this is the first in a series that makes a bit more sense. It's spicy in that it's explicit, but I wouldn't call it hot, most of the spice is pretty brief (for the most part) as the book is more focussed on the wider story evolving round our human PHD student and dragon librarian. Some of the pacing's a bit distracting - chapters switch between MC viewpoints at random, which knocked it down a star for me, but I'll look forward to the next in the series nonetheless.

I think this is the first book by this author I've read. Really enjoyed both the characters and the storyline in the book.

Mark finds a dragon on his first day in Oxford, then meets the slightly grumpy librarian, not knowing they are one and the same.

After a slightly rocky start, Rufus lets Mark into his world. Their connection and chemistry was felt throughout. I adored the scenes where Rufus is taking care of Mark.

The descriptions of Oxford were well done without overwhelming the plot, which there were plenty of. I didn't see some aspects of it coming and I loved that.

The narration was good on the whole, with a few spots where it fell a little flat to me. That was the only criticism I would have with it. Most of the time, I was able to just enjoy the story. The narrator had a pleasant voice and had to work with rapid changes of POV, which were handled well.

I really want Rufus' brother to have a story!

I have only one complaint about this book, and that is the spicy scenes. They fell flat, and I am unsure whether the fault lies with the author or the narrator, though I lean towards the narrator. Apart from that, it was a delight from beginning to end. The main characters were believable and engaging, their insecurities relatable and well explained without turning them into non communicating idiots.
The story gave me moments of "but what if dragons really ARE real?!" and that is the pinnacle of good fantasy to me.
Hugely enjoyable, will definitely get the next book if this becomes a series!

Reread as audiobook - wonderful narration with good voices.
Story - 4 stars. The best kind of dragon - with a book hoard. The emotions of Rufus when he had to let others touch and use the library books were palpable. I liked how both MCs were far more confident in themselves by the end. Mark wasn't quite such an interesting character but a great backup for Rufus. I hope to discover more about this world with more dragon potential than even Rufus was aware of in the beginning.

This was great. I always knew Rufus was something special (anyone who hoards books in any format is 😅).

The relationship between Mark and Rufus develops naturally, even with Rufus' dragon pushing him along. And i loved Mark's easy (and eager) acceptance of Rufus' otherness. All the questions! That made me laugh.

The story is sweet but with enough spice for those who need it. And the mystery of the white dragon (I totally had the wrong person pegged for that) kept me interested until the end.

I'm eager to read Rufus' brother's story.

The narrator did a great job, with easy to differentiate voices.

I absolutely loved listening to this story. The romance was good and there were a few tense moments that kept me on the edge of my seat. Rufus and Mark were really good together.

Rufus Love is a new to me narrator and I think he did a great job performing this story. There were just a few sound quality issues but they weren’t enough to take me out of the story.

I’d love to listen to the next book in this series if it becomes available in audio.

I really enjoyed the mix of paranormal, academia, and romance in this book. Rufus and Mark's journey was entertaining, with plenty of witty banter, forward-moving action, and steamy moments to enjoy. On the paranormal side, I was intrigued by the dragon clan lore and the way Rufus was looked down on for being more interested in books than gold. I had a feeling the color of his scales meant more than his family assumed, and it was exciting to be proven right by the end of the story. There was plenty of dragon-y action towards the end of the book, and I get the sense that there's a much larger plot in the works that will stretch on for the rest of the series. On the academia side, Mark's struggles as a new grad student were very relatable for me. I think many people have had to deal with imposter syndrome, rude classmates, and burnout, and I enjoyed seeing Mark overcome his uncertainties and find his place at the university. On the romance side, Mark and Rufus had sparks right away. It was so cute to see Rufus angsting about not knowing how to talk to Mark, and their first book dates and clumsy conversations were so sweet. Rufus ended up being every bit as protective and possessive as I would expect a dragon to be when guarding his most precious treasure, and he and Mark had insane chemistry once they got physical. Their relationship had a nice balance of steam and sweetness, and even when it seemed like the university might create a lot of problems for them, they worked it out together instead of letting miscommunication tear them apart. Overall I was pleasantly surprised by how well all the different elements of this story worked together, and I'm definitely going to continue on with the next books in this series!
