***
His life is an illusion. Her lie is a gamble. Can two outliers save a kingdom?
The royal court is in turmoil following a massacre. Kel, Prince Conor’s body-double, is hunting for traitors. And the notorious Ragpicker King, ruler of the dazzling city of Castellane’s criminal underworld, holds the only clues. But they lead to a dark conspiracy to destroy the royal family – headed by the man due to marry the woman Kel loves.
Lin will be judged after claiming to be the legendary Goddess Reborn and wielder of powerful magic - now her people’s charismatic leader is ready to test her powers. Failure will mean exile, and only further dangerous deception can save her now. As the simmering tension in Castellane reaches fever pitch, Prince Conor demands that Lin heal his father’s madness. But the King is tormented by an ancient magic, and Lin cannot deny its allure – any more than she can deny her growing passion for the prince. Lin and Kel must decide who they can trust. Yet any false move will mean death – or worse . . .
Lose yourself in a vibrant world of power, intrigue and magic in this spellbinding fantasy from an internationally bestselling sensation.

Great narrative, cool worldbuilding
This is an excellent second instalment in the new Claire series. The characters are getting more complex and fleshed out and the twists were good. Looking forward to the next one!

Utterly brilliant
What an incredible sequel to 'Sword Catcher!' The characters, the world building, the twists, the forbidden romances....all had me on the edge of my seat! I kept having to stop and process everything.
I think knowing Conor's POV would be interesting, loved the way he called Lin 'sweetheart' 🥰
The book has left me excited for the third but alas I think that may be a while. I'll have to re-read them to remind myself of all the characters and plots.
I love the fact Cassandra Clare has developed a whole new fantasy series, she's one clever lady 👏🏻👏🏻
A shout out to the narrators too, they've done an excellent job in both books.

Intricate story telling at its best
Every twist and turn had me gasping and appreciating all the little elements laid down in this and the previous book that led to that moment. Utterly stunning story making, I was captivated every minute.

All the fave characters back for more politics and scheming. it's fun guessing at what's going on.

Disappointed
Like with Sword Catcher, I just really wasn’t enamoured by much in this book. I can’t really gel with any of the characters and there is little in the way of world building. I don’t know. The revelation at the end didn’t do much for me and I won’t be waiting on tenterhooks for the next in the series. There just wasn’t much that was memorable 😕
