About this listen

Number-one best-seller John Grisham returns with his most suspenseful thriller yet.

Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of the USA only four active federal judges have been murdered.

Judge Raymond Fawcett just became number five.

His body was found in the small basement of a lakeside cabin he had built himself and frequently used on weekends. When he did not show up for a trial on Monday morning, his law clerks panicked, called the FBI, and in due course the agents found the crime scene. There was no forced entry, no struggle, just two dead bodies - Judge Fawcett and his young secretary.

I did not know Judge Fawcett, but I know who killed him, and why.

I am a lawyer, and I am in prison.

It's a long story.

Glad I persevered

I almost lost the will to continue with some of the earlier chapters which seemed to be slow and confusing but I persevered and it became better and then became riveting and I could not 'put it down' . A complex story but brilliantly put together.

The Racketeer.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I enjoyed this book although wish I had listened to an abridged version, I think it would've been better moving a bit 'faster'. The story line is good with a good twist it just took to long to get there.

Excellent story - made me want to get to the end

I really enjoyed this book. Like one of the other reviewers, I had been avoiding John Grisham books as the last one that I read/listened to was full of too much repetitive detail and a fairly mundane plot. This book however, was completely different. I kept listening because I wanted to know what the next plot twist was going to be and unlike one of the other reviewers, I had no idea what was coming... I thought that the way the reader/listener was kept in the dark and details gradually revealed was a very clever device. Towards the end, I just waited for the next twist to be revealed and listened for as long as possible as the gaps got filled in. Very enjoyable read - would thoroughly recommend... My only complaint was the way that the narrator pronounced Antigua... (an-ti-gwa?) I've never heard it said like that before and it grated a bit, as unfortunately towards the end, that name came up on numerous occasions! But otherwise I thought that the reader was also excellent.

Back to the old Grisham

I have been reading John Grisham Books for a long time and recently a few of his books have been a disappointment but this is back to the twists and turns and unexpected jumps that captivated me many years ago.

I dont want to go into the tale too much but all I can say is that I was guessing for most of the book, where the book starts to go is no where near where it ends.

Well worth a listen :)

Another great read from Grisham

This deviates from the usual lawyer story and is all the better for it. J.D. Jackson performs superbly and really added to the enjoyment of this highly unpredictable story. I was gripped from the start and just when the plot seems to be winding down, off it goes again catching you up in a whole new story-line. Whether you are a Grisham fan or not I would highly recommend you try the Racketeer!

Towser T

This is a layered thriller. Well crafted, although a clear work of fiction. I could not wait until the next surprise and thoroughly enjoyed it; quite different from other of John Grisham thrillers. I am ready to order the next in the series. Highly recommended, must be 5 stars.

Good story

The latest from John Grisham is a good story and has a number of unexpected twists. I read the book first and then listened to the audio. The audio narration added an extra dimension to the story and helped bring out aspects I had missed while reading. I would recommend this audiobook.
