About this listen

Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013

Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything....

excellent. loved it. rivettjng story, great characters who are utterly believable. i was drawn in from the start and didnt want to stop listening . this was awkward when work got in the way. highly recomend this to all sci-fi fans. loved the nods to "fringe" "torchwood" etc. "neat" as Veek would say!

superb

this is the 1st book ive listened to by this author. I really enjoyed it, although not captivated by it. ot had great potential but i think the ending let it down a bit. However, im going to listen to another by this author. Definitely worth a listen.

Another highly enjoyable book from Peter Clines. He's very good at building tension and does so again here. Good characters, great story and a good narrator. I think this could make a really good film or short series.

Another good one

I've never read any of Peter Clines' books so didn't know what to expect. To be honest I thought it was going to be a paranormal/spooky story so it was interesting for me when I realised it was more sci fi. In a good way!
Absolutely zero complaints from me - the book is well written and the characters seem like real human beings whom you can easily imagine doing and saying the things they do. The narrator was brilliant; he gives each character their own tone which made them more tangible. This was done without being distracting to the story, say with mispronunciations or irritating speech patterns (which immediately puts me off). I am reluctant to say he "puts on a voice" because it's more like he performs the characters' lines. If you are familiar with Audible/audio books and the difference a good and bad narrator can make then you'll know exactly what I mean lol.
The second half of the book picks up pace but that doesn't mean the first half was slow. I think everything was there for a reason and it's worth investing your time listening.
I'm not going to refer to anything plot-wise as I would consider that a spoiler in the case of this book. If you enjoy sci fi then you'll love it. If you've never read sci fi - give it a go and it might surprise you.

Went in blind and was pleasantly surprised!

This was my first book by Peter clines!
It will not be my last . I loved everything about it.
Well rounded , interesting characters whom I cared about. Great plot which could have gone many different ways!
I’ll not ruin the plot for other readers, suffice to say it fed my sci fi fantasy needs. There’s intrigue, love & excitement!

A rip rolling rollercoaster!

Not sure what I was expecting from this novel but it kept me hooked. Again and great idea brought to life with a decent storyline and a great narration.

Pretty damned good

Ray Porter can take a semi interesting narrative and make it excellent. Was a fun and excellently read story!

A fun and mysterious listen with amazing narration

Ray Porter excels, Peter Clines' story is somewhere between "Lost" and the flying spaghetti monster.

What a discovery. Thoroughly enjoyable!

If you like a bit of Stephen King, X-Files and Torchwood then this is for you 😉

A really enjoyable and exciting listen.

This was a nice easy listen. It kept me interested. Heavily influenced by H. G. Wells, which is no bad thing

Original and fast paced
