About this listen
Two years have passed since the emperor's loyal Praetorian guardsman Gnaeus Marcius Rustius Rufinus foiled Lucilla's great assassination plot. Plagued by the ghosts of his past, Rufinus has enacted his own form of justice upon the Praetorian cavalrymen who murdered the imperial agent Dis two years earlier. But the Fates will not let Rufinus rest.
Rome is beginning to seethe with rumour and conspiracy as Perennis, the prefect of the Praetorian Guard, and Cleander, the imperial chamberlain, continue to play their ‘great game'.
With the tide of opinion turning against their commander, Rufinus and his friends embark upon a mission to save the Prefect’s family, only to uncover a plot that runs deep...to the very heart of the empire.
Armed with rare and dangerous evidence, Rufinus faces insurmountable odds in an attempt to bring the truth to light. To save his prefect. To save Rome. To save everyone he cares about.

Strong multi level adventure.

The characters fumbling awkwardness at times reminded my of the US sit com character of Get Smart from the 1960's and indeed this series of stories are very much like spy thriller's set in the ancient Roman Empire.
ST's knowledge of his subject seems peerless and, coming from a geological and war gaming background of 50 years, I'm still learning an awful lot. His description of the geography has me going to Google maps to see if he's been there himself. Seems he has, or at least has based his descriptions on Google maps, the description of the gorge at Tivo being a case in point.
The narration is first class, and as regular audio listeners all know, it's actually the most important thing about an audio book.
Mick the Hick.😊
Get Smart - in Rome; but still a good yarn.
