AD 98. The bustling army base at Vindolanda lies on the northern frontier of Britannia and the entire Roman world. In just over 20 years' time, the Emperor Hadrian will build his famous wall. But for now, defences are weak as tribes rebel against Rome.

Strong narration, good plot, slightly weak ending. Excellent range of accents and tones by narrator. Interesting storyline with a great action-packed climax to one element of the plot but a weaker ending to the second intrigue element.

Especially in the battle scenes you felt like you were right there amongst the fighting.
Also lots of historical information for a novel.

if you like books by Bernard Cornwall you'll probably like this. It is exciting and it's good to have some fiction about Romans in Britain.

Obviously well researched and taking a slightly different approach by making the hero a native Briton serving in the Roman army. As usual the women dont really figure. I will read the second in the series.

I listened to this whilst walking Hadrian’s Wall, it was kind of ok background and the odd wee moment stuck out but I admit the rest kind of washed over me and I found it hard to tune in to the plot…

Interesting wee historical details

I'm a sucker for historical drama and have been all my life. This should have ticked many boxes but it never quite lived up to its promise.
Well researched and a strong sense of location, the book was let down by a somewhat disjointed plot, characters who failed to fully convince, and the vocal talents of Peter Noble featured some over-egged accents. Latin doesn't have to sound so strange!

Adrian Goldsworthy is not someone who would write drivel about roman Britain so I thought I’d be in safe hands. To find the spark for the novel was the party invite from the Vindolanda tablets made me way more excited than it probably should but it worked so well. Peter Noble is to be praised for not mangling the Latin terms as so many narrators do. All those blokes churning out Roman military boys own stories should be force fed this book to see how it’s done.

Loved this book from start to finish. It is obvious that the author has a wide knowledge of the Roman army and it’s activities in northern Britain at this time. I must also give high praise to the reader who brought the times and the characters to life.

loving historical fiction as I do, the best books are by academics giving the reader an insight into the era, and Adrian Goldsworthy is premiere of these. there is of course a great story evolved around this research with characters good and bad on both sides with plenty of intrigue and descriptive battles, all of which I thourghly enjoyed. I can only hope audible release more of his work.
