About this listen
Rory Stewart's sparsely poetic and highly acclaimed account of his walk across Afghanistan in January 2002 has been hailed as a modern classic of travel writing. Traveling entirely on foot and following the inaccessible mountainous route, Stewart was nearly defeated by the hostile conditions. With the help of an unexpected companion and the generosity of the people he met on the way, however, he survived to report back on a region closed to the world by twenty-four years of war...

Endurance and mental strength
Superb narration giving an insight into a culture that exists, one which I found fascinating, instructive and most importantly for me, thought provoking. Thank you Rory.

One man’s pursuit of discovery across the heart of the Eurasian continent.
A simple narrative makes for an easy listen as Rory takes you with him across Afghanistan as he meets and interacts with the different peoples of the various regions he crosses. Their welcomes vary from warm to frigid showing the difference in their outlooks, positions, and experiences of the previous years and decades of Afghanistan’s turbulent recent past.

Blew me away
Fabulous narration by the author that brought the account vividly to life. At the end, I also wept.

I am astounded at Rory’s tenacity, determination and resilience in walking such hostile terrain, and at his knowledge of the history and culture of this region. I learned so much by listening.

Incredible . Page turner . Loved every chapter .
Geopolitics from actual experience delivered by an intelligent and engaging author . The descriptions of this journey made me feel like I could easily picture this journey and educated me not only on cultures that I have no experience of but also of human ignorance and true hardship . Thank you for this book. I literally couldn’t put it down . And Babur .. heartbreaking ❤️🩹 🐕
