Another brilliantly read book from Dom just not quite as good as the others.

Firstly to say that Dom is my favourite author by far and I’ve loved all his work but this is just good, I found the book a little disjointed in places, content was great and then weak, he pulls it off no problem as his skills in reading and entertainment are as good as ever but measured to his previous work there’s something missing.
If your a fan of Doms like me I would recommend you listen as your be happy to back into the world of Jolly, if your a first time Dom reader I would say go back a bit to make the most.

Lack of interviews and arguments with people who believed in conspiracies.

Quite a tedious listen if I'm honest. I thought this would be fun and interesting, maybe some interviews and arguments of people who actually believed in the conspiracies. However, this wasn't that at all. Too many times throughout, Dom reverted to speak to a pretend animal to get points across. Overall it was ok.

Funny but I wanted more debunking!

This was a humorous and enjoyable look at some of the crazy things people believe. As someone who mostly reads popular science it did leave me wanting a more thorough challenge to the 'believers'. Having challenged some of these ideas I could guess what might come next. But I had to remember it was a travel book and Joly was not about to convince those who hold onto these ideas with the most fervent faith. You provide them with evidence, they simply deny it. They don't listen.
It has left me wanting to read more travel writing though and I may get his earlier books too.

I think I'd find it even funnier when I re-listen.

Interesting book but what stood out most is how he seems to dislike absolutely everyone he mentions and it comes across as little bitter which tainted my enjoyment somewhat

It’s fine but no Dark Tourist or Scary Monsters.

Those 2 books are among my favorite of all time for just zoning out and listening to something genuinely funny. This book however is fine. I doubt I’ll listen again but I made it all the way through. I was really hoping for something special here as I thought conspiracy theorists would be great material but the only one we actually got to spend time with at the end was a thoroughly unpleasant sad reject with seemingly few redeeming qualities and maybe thats the point. The people who believe this stuff aren’t really very funny and the consequences of their delusions are messing up the world for everyone else. Even if it’s just electing incompetent criminals, it all erodes what we call our culture and sense of safety. It’s difficult to make that funny. I did wonder if the problem was that Dom was taking these people and their beliefs a bit too seriously and earnestly and trying to make that a vehicle for humour instead of starting out with the view that its bat**** crazy and intelligently tearing them a new one. The other 2 books were great in this respect. I will keep holding out for another master peace of easy listening to rival DT and SM. Hopefully the next one will take us back to that witty entertaining Dom. BTW. If you’re reading this Huxley the guide dog says hey. If you come back to Leicester he promises he’ll try harder to get up on the table for a photo.

Enjoyable listen

An enjoyable lighthearted book dealing with the bizarre and outright nuts beliefs! Definitely made evermore more enjoyable by Dom reading his own material.
