About this listen

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Fully realized, wholly absorbing and almost painfully suspenseful...The journey is mesmerizing.”
New York Times

A woman receives an unexpected visitor during a deadly snowstorm in this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf.

True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls—haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them.

Well, that's 9hrs and 29 mins I'll never get back. What a load of rubbish. I'm amazed that this was ever published. The book jumps from one era to the other without any warning. Hence you're playing catch-up for most of the tale. This book has been written with a film in mind. It would probably make a decent movie, but as for a book, it's dreadful. The narrator doesn't help, dull as dishwater. Read something else, I wish I had.

Painful from beginning to end.

This book was not really my cup of tea. Gruesome in parts with a long drawn out, unrealistic ending. I became bored with it in the end.

A bit Gruesome

The idea for the plot is good, and there are some nice bits, but unfortunately it doesn't hang together well. The plot relies on characters acting in very bizarre ways. For example, Wiley tells Becky that she's locked someone who she believes to be the bad guy in the barn and names him. Becky knows that isn't the real bad guy, but for some reason doesn't say anything about it and instead sits and reminisces with Wiley until it's too late. It's difficult to get past this stuff and enjoy the story.

Well I enjoyed this book, it was a little hard to get into, then I was engrossed. It's easy to listen to, the plot was good. The characters were believable.

Really good thriller
