About this listen

THE EPIC CONCLUSION TO THE GROUNDBREAKING AND RENOWNED LAST KING OF OSTEN ARD SERIES.

'Inspired me to write my own seven-book trilogy. It's one of my favourite fantasy series' GEORGE R. R. MARTIN

'A master storyteller, and the Osten Ard books are his masterpiece' BRANDON SANDERSON

'Paved the way for so much modern fantasy. Including mine' PATRICK ROTHFUSS

'One of the great fantasy epics of all time' CHRISTOPHER PAOLINI

The Hayholt is besieged by the Norns. Once the home of their immortal brethren, the Sithi, now capital of the kingdom of men, the fabled castle is under attack. And as the world is distracted by this strike against humankind, the Norns' deathless witch-queen Utuk'ku turns towards the mysterious fateful valley called Tanakirú - the Vale of Mists.

Meanwhile, Queen Miriamele hurries to save the Hayholt and capture the treacherous noble Pasevalles, but arrives to discover the traitor has escaped.

And inside Tanakirú, Vale of Mists, the bond between Prince Morgan and Nezeru, a renegade Norn, has become something deeper and stranger than either of them could have anticipated. They journey ever deeper to the heart of the valley's mystery, encountering wonder and horror, and come face to face at last with the ancient secret that has kindled the Norn Queen's war - a secret that will destroy immortals and humans alike.

A thoroughly enjoyable series of books to lose yourself in. I listened to them on Audible, but I would love a set of them to treasure for always.

A tale of fantasy and intrigue that you won't be able to put down. These books have carried me through the months with the depth of characters and intricate time-line.

I am sorry to have finished them...parting is such sweet sorrow.

Lose yourself in another world!

I have waited over 30 years for this ending and it certainly didn't disappoint. I just wish my sister who introduced me to the Dragon bone chair was still here to enjoy it.

4.75⭐ A fitting, action-packed end to a saga of epic proportions. We our familiar friends as they navigate their way through a bloody war, their complicated feelings and strange dreams. Tad's prose brings this vibrants world to life and skillfully dangles hope in front of us whole despair is never far behind. We learn more of the world as Tad hides surprises and twists in plain sight for a truly rewarding experience. I could say this is too long but I'm genuinely not sure what could be cut. So many threads needed their conclusion and Tad tied up each one in a very satisfying way. Andrew Wincott's narration was varied and bright, and a true pleasure to listen to. As much as I'll miss Osten Ard, I feel it's made something of a Mooncalf of all who got lost in its pages.

A triumph

Really good and underrated story. Reader does good dialect but makes an entire race sound like a fire place ghost story

Good story somewhat frustrating voice acting

I loved the original stories. The ‘Last King’ continuation was wonderful — a masterclass in how to develop and extend a story. The final book has everything that makes the series great - thrilling action, beloved characters, moments of wisdom and truth. I enjoyed the narration — it was rich in characterisation and consistent across the books.

Masterclass in storytelling
