About this listen
A summer house party turns into a thrilling whodunit when Jane Austen's Mr. Wickham—one of literature’s most notorious villains—meets a sudden and suspicious end in this brilliantly imagined mystery featuring Austen’s leading literary characters.
“Had Jane Austen sat down to write a country house murder mystery, this is exactly the book she would have written.”—Alexander McCall Smith
The happily married Mr. Knightley and Emma are throwing a party at their country estate, bringing together distant relatives and new acquaintances—characters beloved by Jane Austen fans. Definitely not invited is Mr. Wickham, whose latest financial scheme has netted him an even broader array of enemies. As tempers flare and secrets are revealed, it’s clear that everyone would be happier if Mr. Wickham got his comeuppance. Yet they’re all shocked when Wickham turns up murdered—except, of course, for the killer hidden in their midst.
Nearly everyone at the house party is a suspect, so it falls to the party’s two youngest guests to solve the mystery: Juliet Tilney, the smart and resourceful daughter of Catherine and Henry, eager for adventure beyond Northanger Abbey; and Jonathan Darcy, the Darcys’ eldest son, whose adherence to propriety makes his father seem almost relaxed. In this tantalizing fusion of Austen and Christie, from New York Times bestselling author Claudia Gray, the unlikely pair must put aside their own poor first impressions and uncover the guilty party—before an innocent person is sentenced to hang.

ONE OF THE WALL STREET JOURNAL'S BEST MYSTERY BOOKS OF THE YEAR
“Had Jane Austen sat down to write a country house murder mystery, this is exactly the book she would have written. Devotees of Austen’s timeless novels will get the greatest possible pleasure from this wonderful book. Immense fun and beautifully observed. Delicious!”—Alexander McCall Smith
“A well-done pastiche that balances menace with wit, recrimination with reconciliation, sin with redemption and justice with mercy.”—The Wall Street Journal
“Satisfying.... Readers looking for a charming mystery will adore this book. Gray captures Austen’s tone perfectly, allowing fans to step back into the Regency author’s beloved world.”—BookPage
As such this was an insta-buy: I have probably disliked more Austen spinoffs than I’ve loved, but I knew that I could trust Claudia Gray’s grasp of character and her storytelling instincts, and that her prose would be crisp and polished - and so it proved. This book (and its sequels) gleefully combines characters from myriad different Austen books then throws in a murder mystery and designates the son of Elizabeth & Fitzwilliam Darcy and the daughter of Catherine Morland & Henry Tilney as the amateur sleuths du jour.
If you are looking for a pure Austen spinoff, this may not be your jam: Austen did not write whodunnits, and this IS a whodunnit, written with a view to hitting the expected beats of that genre. Gray switches between various characters’ points of view throughout the book, rather than emulating Austen’s omniscient authorial narrative voice, but her narrative voice, as well as the dialogue, evokes the language of the period effectively. (There are 2 or 3 places where I winced, and wished her editors had done better Britpicking for her, but overall it’s very good.) (But, dear Americans: scones have never been breakfast food in Britain, to the best of my knowledge.)
I found Gray’s takes on the various Austen characters very satisfying, and the portrayal of Mr Darcy’s son as on the spectrum in particular is a delightful and entirely plausible choice - Darcy’s combination of social awkwardness and sincerity absolutely does read as on the spectrum, with hindsight, so making their son a trifle more so makes excellent sense.
The audiobook is performed with verve and confidence, and the narrator’s character voices are well judged.
Altogether this was very much my cup of tea.
A thoroughly enjoyable fusion of Austenalia & whodunnits

The narration was very well done.
However, an inconsistency in chapter numeration led to a small irritation. This is something quite common in audible books, where the introduction etc classed as Chapter 1 and the Chapter list is not amended. Hence I listened to a large chunk twice as I tried to find my place over several devices.
good light-hearted listen
