For a while, I wasn’t really all that interested. It seemed like regular old back and forth drama set in the 1500s. I didn’t even realize the protagonist was the protagonist at first. As he was being set up, I thought he was just some victim the protagonists were tired of dealing with. Once he was imprisoned and the story began to follow him, I was indignant on his behalf. I wanted to see the people who had crossed him pay.
Listening over the course of a week, this novel was a bit exhausting at times. I found myself having to take a break often. But every time I booted it back up, I was hooked. The author did a fantastic job of building this world and adding detail. These characters are all incredibly detailed, fleshed out, and believable.
The characters are really what made this story work for me. They weren’t the usual cardboard cutouts who were only introduced when they were needed. They existed beyond their current plot contrivance which made their journey’s all the more compelling. It made their downfalls all the more satisfying. Edmond Dantes works a masterful game of revenge and it had me hooked from the moment it began.
I rarely talk about endings but I will say I enjoyed this one quite a bit. It was a satisfying end to a wonderful story.
Overall, the audio narration was excellent. I can’t stand how the narrator says wh. He puts wayyyy to much emphasis on wh sounds, saying “whhhhhite” “hhhwhhhen”, etc.
