About this listen

It is the autumn of 1880, and Dr. John Watson has just returned from Afghanistan. Badly injured and desperate to forget a nightmarish expedition that left him doubting his sanity, Watson is close to destitution when he meets the extraordinary Sherlock Holmes, who is investigating a series of deaths in the Shadwell district of London. Several bodies have been found, the victims appearing to have starved to death over the course of several weeks, and yet they were reported alive and well mere days before. Moreover, there are disturbing reports of creeping shadows that inspire dread in any who stray too close.

Holmes deduces a connection between the deaths and a sinister drug lord who is seeking to expand his criminal empire. Yet both he and Watson are soon forced to accept that there are forces at work far more powerful than they could ever have imagined. Forces that can be summoned, if one is brave - or mad - enough to dare …

Being a fan of Doyle's Holmes and classic horror tales I found this a relaxing and enjoyable listen. There was no pulse pounding terror or particularly perplexing mystery but the story jogged on at a fair pace and all the usual Holmesian elements were in place. The narrator did a nice job personifying the main characters but his regional accents were jarringly bad! He also had an odd way of pronouncing certain words, but really that's a minor nitpick.

I believe this was free with my current membership, but it was on my wishlist anyway and had I paid for it I wouldn't have been disappointed. I may well listen to the other two in this series.

Easy listening for Holmes fans

Defo one of the better Sherlock pastiches. This has all the usual crime fighting with added squamous tentacles.

Excellent genre Mash up

I really enjoyed this twist on the relationship between Holmes and Watson. Probably not for the Doyle purists but fun to pass the time.

A very interesting addition to the saga

Thoroughly enjoyed

I've spent much time immersed in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and of Conan Doyle. This is a very engaging amalgamation of those worlds, and neither suffers as a consequence. The characters are well-crafted, and the language strikes an authentic note.
I have yet to see where the plot is going, but I really wish that the narration had been checked for pronunciation. The narrator strikes the right note for Watson's voice, less so for Holmes, but Watson would really know how to pronounce words like 'routed', 'aspiring' or, God help us, 'Berkshire' (BARK-shir)! Watson mispronouncing the name of his own regiment grates somewhat.

Only stumbles on the narration

It was a nice and enjoyable mash up of two memorable story lines, just don't take it too seriously and its fun! Plus the narrator was a rather strong point, didn't feel bored listening through it and each character was easily distinct.

An enjoyable book

I thought both the performance and story are very in keeping with the original Holmes - a very enjoyable listen
