The wait is over... Million-copy bestseller Joanne Harris is back with her first fantasy novel in 6 years - and this time it's a love story.

Orphaned, lonely, and lost in his photography work, Tom has no intention of falling in love. And yet, love finds him in the shape of beautiful Vanessa, who lives a dangerous double life in the heart of London's King's Cross.

Tom's pursuit of Vanessa leads him to discover an alternate world, hidden amongst the streets and rooftops of London - and inhabited by strange and colourful beings. In this mysterious realm, two ancient factions - one of night, one of day - have waged war for centuries over a forbidden love and a long-lost prince of sun and starlight.

But when Tom finds a secret market that appears only in moonlight, where charms and spells are bought with memories, he starts to wonder whether he's been here before...

Romeo and Juliet meets fantasy in this spellbinding modern fairytale of fae courts, forbidden love, magical wars, lost princes, and secret worlds hidden just out of sight in the cavernous shadows of contemporary London - perfect for fans of V.E. Schwab and Samantha Shannon.

A wonderful story that draws you in to other worlds , huge recommended and hope you enjoy it as much as I did

Joanne Harris is a wonderful narrator, outstanding

Quite a different Joanne Harris book, unlike others of hers I’ve enjoyed in the past. She narrates it herself and is a reasonable narrator.
The story itself is, well, odd. Quite hard to keep track but strangely enjoyable.
Would definitely not suit everyone so I can’t say that I would wholeheartedly recommend.

A fanciful tale

Just didn’t get hooked. I wanted to like it, but I never felt enough for the characters.

It was ok

I always enjoy Joanne Harris' stories and I really enjoyed this one.

I've given 4 stars for narration. I didn't realise it's Joanne herself so might have felt differently had I known. I found her tone too melancholic, which I didn't enjoy - but as the writer maybe that's the tone she intended.

Beautifully woven tale

I loved the premise of this story and it started strong, I listen whilst walking the dog so in parts it was easy to lose my place/keep track so I'll be listening whilst cleaning instead.

I love Joanne Harris as an author but I'm not a fan of her reading her own books, some of the characters on here lacked depth through the narration. Earlier audio books with Rula Lenska narrating etc were more engaging.

A fairy tale for grown-ups and those not so grown up!

Big fan of Joanne Harris writing for many years. Not a big fan of her narration. This fairy tale would have felt more immersive with a more befitting voice.

Enjoyable

I am afraid I could not get into the storyline or the characters of this book. Maybe I should try and read it again.

This wasn't one of my favourite books of Joanne Harris.

Escapism at its best

This should have been brilliant. Such a wonderful idea. It was well executed and read, but I feel that it didn’t quite hit the mark, and although it was a pleasant read/listen it wasn’t as compelling as some of Joanne’s other books

Great idea, but didn’t quite come off

I just loved this audiobook, the story was brilliant with twists and turns along the way, full of cant put this book down threads, Joanne Harris reads it beautifully, good pace and intonation it really brought the story to life.

magical
