About this listen

The trilogy that began with The Emperor's Blades and continued in The Providence of Fire reaches its epic conclusion as war engulfs the Annurian Empire in Brian Staveley's The Last Mortal Bond

The ancient csestriim are back to finish their purge of humanity; armies march against the capital; leaches, solitary beings who draw power from the natural world to fuel their extraordinary abilities, maneuver on all sides to affect the outcome of the war; and capricious gods walk the earth in human guise with agendas of their own.

But the three imperial siblings at the heart of it all - Valyn, Adare, and Kaden - come to understand that even if they survive the holocaust unleashed on their world, there may be no reconciling their conflicting visions of the future.

Here we go then, the third book of the trilogy and the question has to be - Does it Deliver?

Almost - my only criticism is that the ending feels rushed, and that a lot happens in that remaining 2 hour chapter. Additionally, as much as I enjoyed the epilogue , I would have liked to know more of what became of the other characters.

If there are more books in this series, they'll get bought straight away, Quite happily now a fan of not only the author, but the narrator

A Satisfying End

What made the experience of listening to The Last Mortal Bond the most enjoyable?

Simon Vance is an excellent narrator and his performance definitely enhanced the experience.

Who was your favorite character and why?

So - more like homework than entering a voluntary review of a purchase!
Valyn was perhaps my least favorite character ,with Adare and Pia (Probably spelled wrong,as I've never seen in written down) competing for most favourite.Adare's character developed over the series and I just liked her more.
Pia - funny,if a priestess of the god of death can be funny.....

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Can't pick one.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No - this is perhaps the only weakness in the book. I would have expected the end to be particularly moving, but didn't find it to be.

Any additional comments?

This was a great series,I bought The Emperor's Blades (Book 1) as a Daily Deal, loved it,bought the remaining two books and listened straight through to the end of this book.
The plot continued to twist and produce surprises until the end,and Brian Stavely had a lot of original ideas.
Highly recommended!

Book one starts slowly and the build up through book two into book three was just excellent. I need a rest after that final battle.

Epic, just and epic trilogy

some parts took some effort to come back to. and some parts were breath taking. interesting story. i liked the evolution of the characters, their interactions. war descriptions were less impressive, as was the wold building. overall liked the series very much and recommend. a lot of philosophical discussion on life and what it means to be human -loved it. good job.

One of the best fantasy story’s I have listened to for years Brian Staveley stands up there with the likes of Brandon Sanderson & George R R Martin, fans of their book will love this trilogy
